I never know which card is faster, so could someone list them in order of speed and not by number? Because I hear a 9000 is not as good as an 8500?!? WTF?!? So if anyone could do that for me, and even better if anyone could throw in approximate Nvidia equivalents I'd be very greatful.
 
My quick list, slowest to fastest (a slash indicates essentially equivalent cards):

9000/9200
FX5200 (faster AA than comparable ATi cards)
9000 Pro
8500LE/9100 (memory speeds may dip as low as 200MHz; should be 250MHz)
8500
-------> below this point, ATi cards lose less performance enabling AA & AF, and look better doing so <--------
9600 (not sure about this, but I believe a 9600 is faster than the 8500 series w/o AA & AF)

Aim for 128MB. I'm reasonably confident in the ATi order. It's tougher to integrate nV into the chart because nV's FX cards tends to fall off faster with AA+AF vs ATi's DX9 cards, and I still believe the FX line will be slower than ATi with DX9 effects (though you can always just turn off DX9 effects).

Again, check the Digit-Life and NordicHardware articles I referenced in your Ars thread. This sort of list is always imperfect, as the cards can change performance order depending on the game and the extra filtering. Really, your best bet is to read as many well-done reviews as you can to find benchmarks relating to the games or genres you'll be playing.
 
That's a pretty good breakdown.

The 9000, 9200, 8500, and 9100 still give AF with only a small performance hit though.
 
Yes, those cards take only a 10% hit with AF, whereas nV cards of that generation (GF3/4) lose more like 25+%, IIRC. The GF3/4's AF is technically superior though. In fact, it's the best consumer AF yet, as nV sacrificed some IQ for speed with their FX lineup. 3DCenter.org has a bunch of expansive benchmark sessions (lots of different games and settings) with 8500's and GF4's, if anyone's interested.
 
You forgot the 9600SE which is usually slower than the 9200, but sometimes faster. And the 9200SE which is the slowest of them all.
 
Great list...I actually can't find one argument =) Thought I found one with 9500/9600 but then saw the pro's down further 🙂

WobbleWobble: Blech, cards with 64-bit memory buses aren't worth mentioning for gamers. 😛

jjyiz28: Maybe, if you're focusing on AA+AF and DX9 performance. I tried to take a speed first, quality second approach. In the end, the faster card remains playable longer, and I don't think a 9700 qualifies as faster than a 5900/SE/XT.

I wouldn't put the 9700 Pro over the 5900 Ultra. But other than that, I think the list is fine.

It is my understanding that the 9800 and 9700P perform almost identically.
 
No they don't. It's about a 10fps difference between the 9700 Pro and 9800 XT. Well, yeah that's pretty much the same, but not at the same time.

I didnt say XT, i said 9800.
 
Whoa, any of the gf4 ti cards faster than the 9500 Pro? Maybe the 4600 in limited situations, but that is certainly wrong.
 
The 9800 (NON-PRO) performs, for all practical purposes, identically to the 9700 PRO. I've never seen a difference of more than 1-2% over a set of benchmarks (usually there's one or two tests where there is a marginal difference, and then in the rest they're well within 1% of each other). The 9800Pro is a bit faster, the 9800XT a bit faster than that. Nobody was trying to say that the 9700Pro is the same as a 9800Pro or 9800XT (although I'm also curious as to why the 5900U is *between* them on that list).
