The two schools in question are RIT (Rochester Institute of Technology) and SDSU (San Diego State University). It'll be for a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, specifically concentrating on wireless communication. Please post your opinion and your reasons for it.

Thanks a bunch!!!

Edit I'm mainly asking for an academic comparison, both in reality and in reputation. The surrounding areas and the weather, etc need not be factored in. THanks!!!

I know this school isn't on your list but since you're looking at San Diego anyways, I've heard UCSD is *THE* top grad school if you plan on specializing in comm. My friend just turned down a ~$20k fellowship there to go to Stanford though :Q

I'd probably go to RIT simply for the name...carries more EE punch to me personally than SDSU...(plus i've actually visited it and it's got great facilities)

BUT, SDSU is in california!!! that alone is quite a selling point....

I got my undergrad in EE @ penn state with a focus on wireless comm btw.... :)

edit: my grammar = suck

Overall SDSU doesn't have a great reputation. It wouldn't surprise me if EE was the exception to this, but I don't know either way. I know RIT is a pretty good school. However, Rochester, as a city, sucks as a place to live. I live in Buffalo, so I know a little about Rochester. San Diego, on the other hand is a nice city with arguably the best weather in the US. Everything being equal, go to SDSU, but if their EE department is a joke, bute the bullet and go to RIT. If you visit both campuses, you will choose SDSU.

RIT is one of the two schools that just got raped by the FBI cracking down on warez. bwahahahah.

I would goto RIT, cuz SDSU is notorious for being a joke.

bUnMaNGo, UCSD would have been a no-brainer.. but it's a no-go.. (rejected)...

as far as living conditions go.. i know that San Diego is a much nicer place to live than Rochester, but seeing that my brother (the person facing the decision now) had lived in Rochester for 2 years before and had somewhat gotten used to it, I think it wouldn't be that bad.

what I'm hoping some of you could answer is which school is better academically.. whether in reputation (which some of you have commented on) or in reality.. thanks for the comments so far! please keep them coming!!

SDSU is lame, UCSD has a wayyyy better program for all kinds of engineering. for educational value i would probably choose RIT

So, if EE's never sleep as is, what is grad school like for them?

Remember, there is a EE in sleep, but there is no sleep in EE.

Or, you can't spell geek without a EE. ;) (j/k)

Good luck with your choice buddy. I would look at UCSD, but if you have to go with one of the two listed, I would go to RIT for the name as well. As an outsider to the field, SDSU doesn't carry as much weight as RIT does.

RIT has a pretty ugly campus and you stuck in the middle of Upstate NY... winters are cold!! and not that fluffy fun snow cold... we're talking blistering winds that make it -20 cold....

I'd consider them a tie and make my decision based on the other factors that are important to you.

btw, it's nice seeing someone NOT pursue an MBA for a change. Sheesh we get tons of MBA'd resumes anymore. The market is flooded with them.

personally i think that UCSD has a better grad school than RIT.. so does USNews.. Thats just the rankings for grad school for engineering in general, not specific fields.. but UCSD is # 14 on that list and RIT isnt even listed in the top 50.... although if you wanna go to a better engineering grad program you'd go to Georgia Tech....

Yeah, I recommend looking into Purdue as well. But if I had to choose between SDSU and RIT, I'd pick RIT...but that's only because I'm more familiar with it.

My buddy is finishing up his masters in EE at RIT now. He recommend it HIGHLY. The biggest problem with RIT is, being a technical school, there are very few females there. Also, the weather sucks and the city is pretty crappy, but you can always go to Nick Tahou's and get yourself a garbage plate for dinner :)

I think you're looking at this from the wrong perspective. You want to specialize in wireless communication, correct? So, go find out who are the top professors in the field (doing research, R&D, new technologies, etc etc). Then, find out where they teach and apply to those schools.
