Please advise: Which are best mid-range cards at this moment?! Please help me choose from list inside!

Hi,

Could you please tell me which is the best mid range card to get at this moment cause it has been a while since I bought a card and I don't know anything about PCI Express cards. If I buy a new PC now, is it best to get a PCI Express card?

From following list: http://www.vdhsoft.be/eu/0065.HTM which card(s) would you recommend?!

Isn't the most important thing that it has 8 pixel pipelines, cause I remember from some time ago that this really made the difference. If so, how come that a mid-range card like X700 doesn't have 8 pixel pipelines or isn't that considered a mid-range card.
Also, is ATI or NVIDIA the best now.

So, which cards would you recommend (perhaps give top 3 or something).

I guess nVidia's GeForce 6800 GT can now be considered mid-range. And it's fairly cheaper now than its original price was of course. And is a good performer as well. But that's just my suggestion. Others here might suggest you something better.

Can you give a bit more info, like how many pixel pipelines does that 6800 GT have cause I can't find this info anywhere.

Maybe it would be easiest if you could say which is the best mid-range ATI and NVIDIA card and then perhaps also which one you recommend from those. And please also give some info about pixel pipelines and other things that matter.

the x700 has 8 pixelpipes and 6 vertex shaders

the 6800gt and x800xl has 16 pixelpipes and 6 vertex shaders

pixelpipes are far more important in current games

i've had the x700a nd 6800gt, the x700 is surprisingly decent though the 6800gt/x800xl would be roughly 2.5-3 times more powerful (though most of that is the ability to put AA/AF on)

but still it means it will be able to play games decently for far longer

x700's are comparable to the 9700 pro

x700 pro to the 9800 pro

Let's not forget the X850 Pro (12PP/6VS) which can overclock very well to beat both an X800XL and 6800GT . . . also can be unlocked to X850XT . . .

Out of that particular list though the best value is probably an X800XL . . .

All of these are good mid-range cards:

ATI: (ranked from least to most expensive)
-X800GT (8PP/6VS)
-X800GTO (12PP/6VS)
-X800 (12PP/6VS)
-X800GTO2 (12-16PP/6VS)
-X800XL (16PP/6VS)
-X850Pro (12PP/6VS)

nVidia (again least to most):
-6600GT (8PP/3VS)
-6800 (12PP/5VS)
-6800GT (16PP/6VS)

As you can see, nvidia's list is much more straight forward and is basically between the 6600GT & the 6800GT.

ATI's however (due to excess inventories) is complex and can be confusing. However, generally an X800GT = 6600GT; X800GTO = X800 = 6800 OC; X800XL = X850Pro = 6800GT; X800GTO2 = X850XT

Then however, it gets more complex: X800GTO (R480) = X850Pro; X850Pro unlockeable = X800GTO2 = X850XT

So what card should you get? Well it all comes down to price vs. value. The best VALUE here is certainly the X800GTO2 for $199. The best price would be the 6600GT. However, considering the X800GTO2 costs only about $50 more than an average 6600GT and can essentially be more than twice as fast definitely makes it the better value. Moving beyond that we're essentially looking at a three-way battle between X850Pro, X800XL, and 6800GT all three of which perform similary with the X800XL being the cheapest while the X850Pro being possibly the best value.

Still though, if you can get your hands on a X800GTO2, that's definitely the best "mid-range" card out there now. Otherwise, if you don't overclock the X800XL, and if you do OC, the X850 Pro or 6800GT . . .
