Pleas help a guy out w/ his first high speed internet connection...

as the subject line states, I will be getting my very first high speed internet access connection & have some questions for the brains :)
my chief concern is security...the cable company will be providing a modem only, with only 1 connection, so I will eventually be getting a router of some sort, as I plan to build in the near future a computer for my wife & i downstairs, just for light duty stuff...my gaming rig will be going upstairs....what do I need to keep these computers relatively "safe"? besides obvious stuff such as antivirus/spyware prevention, not opening attachments etc.?
im looking for stuff on the hardware side...will any sort of router provide some protection? are certain types better than others (i would like to go the wireless router path if possible)?

price is a chief concern as well, as times have been a bit tough as of late, hehe

a friend suggested having a firewall separate computer set up as well, but that is also not possible right now...the solution needs to be relatively inexpensive, available fairly quickly, & somewhat future proof in that i sort of need it to be a wireless solution (BTW, i'm in a fairly rural area, so people "stealing" bandwidth on the wireless signal should not be a problem, but I will try to set up to prevent that as well :) )

basically, is my computer grossly vulnerable if i hook it up directly to the modem for the time being & purchase a router a bit later? will a router provide more protection? are there any decent inexpensive models?

I am using Nvidia's firewall now, but I hear it's prety much a joke...thanks in advance fellas!

Linksys WRT54G

It is a router that also includes a firewall among other things.

It can be had for ~$50.

Wireless 802.11g.

Once you get it, ditch all other firewalls.

Price and functional wise get Wireless Cable/DSL Router (you do not need to use the Wireless if you do not need it, all Wireless Router are wire router as well).

From the Wire perspective there is no much difference between the Routers. All Routers provide NAT Firewall by default.

The whole thing should look like this: http://www.ezlan.net/network/router.jpg

A Router by itself provides only the first level of security; in addition you need software Firewall AntiVirus and AntiSpy programs as well.

My recommendation is to remove the word "eventually" from your plan concerning the router. You'll need that before you ever hook up a PC to the Internet. I don't trust software firewalls enough to plug a PC directly into a cable/DSL modem.

keelysam's pick is a good one. Even if you don't have wireless now, you'll "eventually" (there, I used the word up for you) buy a laptop that will benefit greatly from a wireless connection.

My PCs are wired, but I still have a wireless router ready for the future laptop. If wiring isn't too hard or expensive, I'd recommend that for your computers.

Definitely a good router/wireless access point to go with. It gets even better if you grab some 3rd party firmware for it to get at all the real goodies that are possible with the WRT54G.

As far as "Once you get it, ditch all other firewalls." ... bad advice. Even with a router/firewall in place at the border of your network, you are not protected by it when it comes to outgoing connections. Something such as Zone Alarm or Sygate Personal Firewall should still be installed on every machine on the network.
