Im gonna call BS... Why would nvidia make a card thats slower than the 6990?
Considering the thing is bound to cost more than the 6990.

Doesnt make sense.

Whats BS? Read the article. He downclocked a pair of 580's to rumored specs of the 590 and used the latest drivers.

Going to "call BS" on what?

Basically the article takes the rumoured specs of the rumoured GTX590 (600MHz) and then puts them to the test with two GTX580s.

Are you calling BS on the rumoured specs? Because there have been many threads about the specs, this is about the implication of the specs if accurate, and yes, it does result in a dumb card.

Ouchies.. thats not gonna make the 590 easy to sell (/.\)
Rumored specs must be off abit.

Worst is this:

Even downclocked to 600mhz, its still useing more watts than the 6990.
Playing Dirt2, 580 SLI @600mhz uses 520watts vs the 6990's 428watts.

You also got to take into consideration, that a GX2 / X2 / Dual gpu card is usually a few percent slower than the same video cards in Crossfire / SLI. Since in some games, the 6990 is slower than 6970 Crossfire. So will a GTX590 be a few percent slower still since its two gpus smashed on one card ?

It lost in every single test, the power consumption could be fixed by using specially binned cores, but if they make it faster than a 6990, its going to use a lot more power. Not looking good I must say.

You say that as if Nvidia has never released a more expensive but slower card before. They've done it several times.

I keep hearing about how fast these GPU's are "6990 / 590" Crossfired cards, SLI'd cards, I read it everywhere that even for the highest resolutions these would almost be overkill. Dual 6990's or dual 590 ?

I say, let AMD.ATi / Nvidia take 2 years off. Design a beast of a card. Make cooling/power/performance completely insane, then release in 2013. Maybe by that time, these types of cards wont be overkill.

Of course, I'm bored and rambling, but still. :colbert:

Tweaktown just did some kamikaze testing with a 6990 @100% fan, max voltage @ 1000mhz and didn't beat stock gtx 580sli in most tests.
As long as the Nvidia card is well engineered and can o/c to stock 580 settings, its going to compete.
As far as being able to sell, these cards are Halo trophies, they don't need or want to sell a ton of these. They won't price them crazy low or crazy high imo.

Here is a non-story : :)

I dont believe they dropped the GPU voltage when they downclocked at 600MHz witch would had dropped the power consumption further and secondly the 600MHz was supposed to be for a 300W GPU and not 375W.

If and i say again IF GTX590 will be released with 375W it will have higher clocks than 600MHz.

Is it me or does that look like a singel fan in middle cooler?

....GeForce GTX 590 is still a dual slot card...
So cooler isnt gonna be a big mofo that takes up 3 slots to handle the additional power usage of the 580x2 chips.

I was kinda thinking nvidia would beat the 6990, by cooler design and give it a huge cooler so it can oc, use more power and thus win in performance.

But with putting only a single fan in middle, and only 2 slot taken in depth, its cooling is probably only gonna be simular to the amd card.

So load/noisy and hot like the 6990, or more so?

Apparently it does beat 580SLI at 1ghz.

If you take a few percent off 580SLI cause single cards are a little slower than Dual cards. So unless they can cool it well enough to OC to 580 speeds or higher. The 6990 looks to have the edge.

IMHO the only real way to juice more out of these is to make liquid cooling a requirement.

Soon we ll see 3 slot take pr card, because their as long as can be, and they need bigger Air coolers to cool the card.

meanwhile on the other end of the spectrum...
the 8watt TPD APUs (gpu+cpu) can be cooled passively :p

Thats more like it! :) (VR-ZONE picture of the heatsink must be wrong then, they say its 2 slots only)

its bound to make it more expensive, but its a far better option.
The 590 will need the cooling to be able to OC back upwards of normal stock speeds or higher.

BTW I think all cards that are duals should have coolers like this:
Test_af_ASUS_GTX580_DirectCU_II_grafikkortet.jpg

6990 is abit noisy to say the least... if they had went with a cooler like this... wouldnt have been a issue as much.

How do they simulate power draw of one card with 2 cards?....Its already acknowledged that GPU sandwiches do not use the same power as 2 separate cards!
