I wanted to do something nice so I went to get a gift-request card off the "sharing tree" at work. The only one left says "Jennie age 15 would like a playstation game".

1) As it doesn't say PS1, PS2, or PS3 which console should I buy for? I'm an Xbox guy, myself, so I'm not sure how the Playstation consoles work with backward compatibility.

2) What games do 15-year old girls play?!

If she has a PS3 then Little Big Planet would be a good choice. It's cheap now and even a non-gamer girl could have fun with it. The problem is, you don't know how much of a gamer the girl is, or which system she has. Can you ask the person who put in the request?

It's likely the note is referring to PS2 or PS3, however since most PS3 consoles aren't backwards compatible with PS2 games, it's a gamble buying something for either system. PS1 games play on all models of PS1, PS2, and PS3 however..so I guess that is your best bet. Given that used PS1 games are so cheap on Ebay, you might consider actually getting a couple. The Spyro and Ape Escape games are good adventure games for all ages. A puzzle game would also probably be good. Check this site for the best games according to rating - http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/ps/metascore

A great suggestion if she has a PS3.

This is set up through a charity (United Way) so I don't think there is any way to ask questions. No doubt the person taking the initial information was ignorant of the PS1/2/3 differences, or they probably would have asked at the time.

My rationale is that the PS1 is too old for anyone to still own/use, and the PS3 is too expensive for a poorer family (yes, broad generalizations). I figure PS2 is probably my best bet. But, I would feel terrible if that little girl opened her ONLY present and she couldn't even use it!

Argh!

Yeah, you really are screwed. It's also possible the request-er lumps all video game systems as "playstation." The girl could very well have a Gamecube.

You might try seeing if you can get additional information from the United Way anyhow.

I suppose a reasonable fallback position might be the gift card option. Yeah, it sucks that she wouldn't have anything to play on the day of (celebratory holiday), but it also means that the risk of getting a coaster is lessened somewhat.

That's true. You could get a $20 gift card to Gamestop or something. Maybe write a note about "not being sure which system she has, but here's a gift card. Merry xmas!"

You’re right. You’d think if a parent had one shot at getting their kid a present to save the holiday season they would make sure to provide all appropriate details. Read on for my solution…

I just had the same idea.

The back of the gift-request card says that gift cards may be substituted for requested items. Like you said, a gift card isn't as immediately fun, but it is guaranteed not to make a girl cry over the holidays!

Whew, I feel better now.

Buy her a dildo, I mean a Move controller :p

On a serious note, I like the gift card idea and it would give her a better chance at getting a game.

Come on, not in a tech forum. Keep that to OT or L&R please.

Gift card vote # elventy. Even if you knew the real system, she might already have the game you picked out. Or she might be hardcore and prefer Call of Duty over Barbie Princess Dress-Up

Gift card is your safest bet, though if she DOES only have a PS1 the giftcard will be worthless. They haven't sold used PS1 games in a long ass time.
