No, it is a Smash Bros clone, an uneven one at that.
That's what I thought for about the first half hour playing it. Then we started focusing on what was different, and it is actually a *lot* different in terms of mechanics.
Only being able to kill people a couple of times per match just isn't very exciting.
You are insanely bad at the game if you only get to kill people a couple times per match. Running 3 minute rounds we were pushing into the 20-30 kill range per player after a few hours with it(that lowered a bit once we started getting the hang of positioning and defensive techniques a bit better, but getting to 1x is *very* quick).
Everybody seemed to gravitate towards a certain character or two, and after trying them I could see why.
Which characters? Some are better for button mashing, but they seem to do a bit worse when you learn some mechanics. Most of the really good button mashing characters seem to have more trouble with combos and juggling.
and calling this game a fighter is a stretch
After spending some time with it I'd say it qualifies as a fighter. Now to be honest, that was actually disappointing to me on some levels as I was *hoping* it would be a SSB clone with Sony characters, playing SSB half smashed is a popular past time with many of my friends, after spending a day with it it was clear that this was closer to MvC then SSB in terms of depth and complexity and didn't lend itself well as a party game(unless everyone sucks 😛 ).
