PlayStation 3, XBOX 360 questions

I was about to go buy an xbox 360 today until I realized that to have HDMI you'd have to get the Elite. Now let me state that I know that PS3 games suck right now, but I'm willing to wait. So here are my questions to you:

Are the hard drives on the systems proprietary? If not, are they laptop HDs?

I know you pay for Xbox live, but is PS3 online play free?

I always read before the PS3 release that the cheaper version does not include an HDMI port, is this true?

Besides the increase to 120GB,addition of HDMI output and color, is the Xbox 360 elite different otherwise? Is the HD DVD add-on included?

Thanks for your help guys.

Hard drives are xbox specific, you cannot use your own.

PS3 online is free

Couldn't tell you about including an HDMI port or not. If you are referring to $500 vs $600 PS3s I thought they stopped making the $500 (20gb) one?

HD-DVD addon is not included with any.

Edit: Misread question

You're right that you can only use HDMI with the Elite. You would only NEED HDMI if you were going to get the HD-DVD add on. I don't know how many games are currently are 1080p, but I could imagine not many.

I would pick a system based on games, or if you feel one way or another for blue-ray/hd-dvd.

ps3 HD is laptop HD, you can switch it for a larger one but will lose some features (blue-tooth, card reader)
supposedly there will be a slew of ps3 titles that are scheduled for release

Wow that's good to know, do you know why that is?

Answers: Xbox hard drives are proprietary. Can't throw in your own hard drive. PS3 hard drives are laptop drives, however you can still use a regular HD if you don't mind it sticking out the back of your PS3 😛

PS3 online is free(for now[Link])

Since Sony dropped the $500 version, there is no cheaper version, however it DID include HDMI when it was available.

No difference at all. Not worth the extra $$, because HDMI isn't really needed at all. The HD DVD addon can still be used over component or VGA.

Xbox 360 = proprietary
PS3 = laptop HD, can be swapped

PS3 is free.

False, the only differences between the two versions are: HD size, wi-fi, and slots for memory sticks/SD/ etc. HDMI is standard for both versions.

Can't help you with Elite question since I don't own one.

WTF, absolutely false. Why the hell would you lose features?

Unless you have a TV that will accept 1080p over component (RARE), then the HDMI is needed with the HD-DVD add-on.

Thanks for clarifying that Dacalo.

It's true that knowing who'll win the HD format war would make my decision easier. Having read this I think I'll be going to the PS3 route, though not quite yet. Guess I'll just wait and make this decision around christmas time.

VGA also can display 1920x1080 (i.e. 1080p), though its not exactly the most common type of input either.

So can component. It all depends on whether or not your TV will accept that resolution over that specific method. Most HDTVs will only accept 1920x1080 over HDMI.

That's because it's a 20gb version which did not have those features in the first place.

my bad. should have clarified.

buy used 20gb model, ugrade hd, but will lose some features

Tough decision. I love both systems..

Ps3 is an amazing machine, very well built, quiet,.. Games look better, SD-DVDs look better (MO of course), UI feels+looks better as its not cluttered with adverts. Problem is, after re-buying oblivion there aren't any games I want.. Well maybe motorstorm. I have the feeling the system will be around for awhile though, this will change. Game-wise, I felt the same way about the 360 for the first year after launch. I also appreciate how everything is integrated, since I am the type of consumer who wants all the "doo dads" anyway.. Wifi, Bluetooth, BlueRay all in a slick looking box.. 360 is cluttered, HD box sitting on top, Wifi Adapter clamped on the back, wires everywhere.. Not so nice on a clean AV rack.

XB360+ HDDVD ( 1080P over VGA ) - has some absolutely terrific games out right now, this cant be understated. The 360 has finally tore me away from my PC as a gaming platform. That was no small feat.

HD-DVD ( like bluray) looks goregous. XBOX live is unmatched.. Phenomenal marketplace, arcade games, demos, you name it. Achievement points are a nice addition. They add another element of challenge to games, especially for goal oriented people. I actually miss these on the PS3. What I dont like about the system is its L O U D !! not very well built.. Looking at the systems side-by-side, its obvious which one cost $600 (well $450 in my case) and the one that costs $400(+addons)

I would say get a PS3 right now ( since you said you were willing to wait on the games), then grab a 360 once the new 65nm, improved HSF jobbers come out.

OMG A NUTREL FANBOI WTFZOORS

my biased opinion is to get the xbox 360 just because the online infrastructure is so well developed that it is well worth the price of the system alone.

Remember, Microsoft has stated they will not, I repeat will not produce any games in HD
So the HD DVD drive will only be used for movies. That may not affect your decision, I just didn't see it stated before. I have both systems and I like both. The 6 axis controller is something to get used to on the PS3.

As far as the online part for both systems, the way I see it, you get what you pay for. The PS3 online is not centralized so that could be a disadvantage between the two. Xbox Live is pretty nice.

Xbox is way ahead on the games library and for online play but you must buy an extended warranty because the current design has a high failure rate (somewhere between 10% - 49%, but Mcrosoft ain't tellin').

Blu-ray is winning the HD war so far: disc sales for 2007 are 2-to-1 over HD-DVD, all studios except Universal are either dual-format or (most) blu-ray exclusive. It's still early though so HD-DVD might stop losing later.

Cost depends on what you buy: a 360 Premium with extended warranty ($30) and Live ($50) is only $480, but add add wifi ($85) and HD-DVD ($170) and it's over $700.

Waiting until closer to Xmas is best if you can:
- the PS3 will probably drop to $500
- we'll know whether HD-DVD starts offering a serious challenge to blu-ray
- the xbox 360 will have its redesign with a new, cooler 65nm CPU and hopefully less failure.
