Playstation 3: video question

I have my ps3 running on my pc monitor through an x2vga2 vga transcoder. 720p is pretty good but the picture looked like its been crushed horizontally and characters on the screen look to tall and thin. Does this most likely mean that my monitor can't support 720p properly? Thanks.

Is it a standard 4:3 monitor or widescreen?
