For me, I was amazed by the production values of Catherine and how much fun and hectic the gameplay was. Sadly, my PS3 got murdered by cockroach feces and I lost my progress in the game.

I also had a fair bit of fun in Gran Turismo 5 and 6. I probably have over a hundred PS3 games bought on sale in my PS library but haven't been able to play 99% of them. Life is cruel.

I would love to know how to restore a backup from an old PS3 model to a newer one. Tried at least two times but it didn't work. I think it's coz of the encryption keys being different.

Yup, unfortunately the backup is tied to the hardware it came from due to the encryption keys.

You're just worried about the savefiles?

I believe savefiles can be transferred to different consoles by putting the hard drive into a USB dock/caddy and using the restore feature on the new console. Note that you won't get downloaded content, for that you need to log in to the PS network account and redownload to the new console (and I think you can only do that across 3 consoles, and after that you need to purchase again). So any time limited demo's are gone and you won't ever get them back unless you repair the original console.

Now that I am thinking on it, I believe you need to have exported the saves first... I never upgraded to a new console, but only ever swapped out to a larger hard drive (I should probably consider making a backup now... my console is a launch 60GB PS3 and still works (and I should probably re-apply thermal paste again, since it has been years since I did that)).

My favorite PS3 games on my launch 60GB model were

Resistance: Fall of Man. My son and I played that through on co-op a couple of times

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

I never got into Resistance: Fall of Man. I mean, I purchased it, but could never get past the controls. I think it has to do that I can't stand shooters without using a keyboard and mouse. Although surprisingly I did really like "Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty", and the Uncharted games.

Enjoy the 1st one and any of the later games?

Nintendo managed to get exclusives from the series on Gamecube and GBA and it sucks that they aren't available anywhere else.

Old bump, but I'll go with Demon's Souls. That game was a blast and the entire reason I bought a PS3 back in spring 2017 after how much I enjoyed Bloodborne after buying a PS4 in December 2016. Bosses weren't as interesting as later FromSoft games but the level design was top notch. Would probably take it over The Last of Us and Uncharted 2-3, though those were great too. Still can't believe Gamestop had PS3s for $40 in spring 2017. How the hell would you not buy one for that price? Nowadays good luck even getting a DualShock 3 for that price. Still going to have to fire it up to play all those Ratchet & Clank Future games I bought for like $1.99 each in the PSN sales in 2017 when they were putting all the system's heavy hitters on the equivalent of clearance sales every week in every new sale. Glad I got every exclusive I wanted that was available digital before they stopped fire selling PS3 games after the 2017 summer sale.

Is someone still playing ps3?
I'm not playing it, but I just found mine last week. My neat freak wike put it in a container, and didn't tell me. I have no idea what she did with the games though. Sadly neither did she.

Which one is it? I love the sheen on the fat one. I have an aversion to the slim one since it was the one that died on me and it also has a pretty boring look and feel. The super slim's BD cover is too flimsy and doesn't tend to stay in place but I guess it's an improvement over the slim model.

I have 2x Slim units with 1TB SSDs in them. One of the Slim units it hooked into a gaming entertainment center along with a Wii U and Nintendo Switch. I still play my PS3 from time to time.

I had the original 60GB model yellow light of death on me. I'd say about 2/3 of my PS3 collection is digital now. Same for my PS1 collection because I bought a lot of $5 or less digital versions of my (mainly SquareSoft) RPGs.

Edit: Also, there's a 4.91 update out there now.

Can always put CFW on if it's a Fat or CECH-20xx or CECH-21xx Slim. Or a HEN if CFW isn't doable. I wouldn't feel bad about doing it either since you can't buy PS3 games digitally anymore.

I'll probably just junk it. It's just a paperweight without the games.

NOOOOOO. As @SteveGrabowski said, you can put custom firmware on it. And if it hasn't been updated for years, you may be able to install Linux on it and then just make sure never to use it for playing games with network access enabled. With Linux installed, it's a collector's item.

Why would you care about the physical games? You can just put custom firmware on if it's a Fat or a CECH-21xx or older Slim (some CECH-25xx Slims too), and if not you can install a homebrew enabler (only difference is I think with the HEN you probably have to do a ten second jailbreak upon every boot). Either way can play the rom of any game you want. It also has a pretty competent PS2 software emulator which I used to play through stuff like Persona 4, Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, and Persona 3 FES flawlessly though the PS2 Classics they used to sell on the store. But you'll get the same experience just using the emulator yourself with roms of the games. It also has a great PS1 emulator that makes an old PS3 way better than a Playstation Classic for playing PS1 games. PS3 is still a great system to keep around since you get access to two and a half great Playstation libraries (and the half may be exaggeratedly low given how many PS2 games run great on the software emulator).

I just had this crazy thought. What's your PS3 model number??? If it's the one that has a REAL PS2 CPU in there for accurate hardware emulation of PS2 games, you have a super rare PS3! I would TREASURE that!

Yep. I still have my PS3 fat with full PS2 compatibility. The main thing you need to do with those is that you need to take them apart every 3-5 years, clean out all the fans and air passages, and re-apply the thermal paste between the CPU and GPU chips (and absolutely do that if you have never done it before as the factory thermal paste will have completely dried out by now and is no longer functioning). This is the cause of most of the yellow light of deaths as there is no good thermal protection within the system to shut things down before damage.

Look for what CECH model it is. If it's CECHA or CECHB absolutely do not junk it. Even if you don't want to play it that's a full BC model with both PS2 cpu and PS2 gpu built in and should sell for decent money. It's the only way to have a hardware PS2 with an HDMI connection without doing any modding.
