PS3 to run at 120 fps?

It's possible, says Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi; all that's needed is a TV capable of displaying it.

Coming soon to an Internet message board near you: waves of more-hardcore-than-thou posters referring to any game running at 60 frames per second (fps) as "a slideshow."

Appearing at the Tokyo International Digital Conference on Thursday to talk about the technological capabilities of the PlayStation 3 and the Cell processor, Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutaragi said he expects the PS3 to be capable of running games at a stunning 120fps, according to a report in The Nikkei BP.

Never mind that even newer TVs aren't capable of refreshing the screen 120 times in a single second. Kutaragi said that when new technology comes to market, he hopes to have the PS3 ready to take advantage of it.

As for the Cell chip at the heart of the PS3, Kutaragi also had high hopes for its future beyond gaming. Using high-definition TV as an example, he said that the Cell chip could take advantage of the technology in many ways, such as displaying newspapers in their actual size, showing multiple high-definition channels on the screen at once, and video conferencing. He emphasized that the Cell can be used to decode more than 10 HDTV channels simultaneously, and it can also be used to apply effects such as rotating and zooming.

Later, he introduced the idea of a Cell cluster server that operates with 16 units, each consisting of eight Cell chips running at 2.5Ghz. That would be a total processing power of 25.6 teraflops. Kutaragi also outlined plans to shrink the chip from the current 90-nanometer process to a 65-nanometer process in the future and eventually down to a 45-nanometer process.

Way go to Ken  lets support something that IS NOT EVEN POSSIBLE ON A TELEVISION!!!

I swear ... what other lies can Sony come up with to hype the PS3 up?

1. PS3 Sucks.
2. Xbox 360 Sucks.
3. Both companies suck, PC's forever
4. Nintendo Revolution's TV remote will rock the house!

there, I think we've cover all angles of fanboi-ism.

Now can we all admit that all gaming companies basically publish bold faced lies about their machines and get on with life?

1. XBox live - can't even be compared to ps2 online gaming.
2. Games on both systems always look better on XBox

thats pretty much sums it up why I like xbox more than ps2, nothing more. oh, and i purchased a ps2 on release date, gamecube on release date, and xbox i didnt get until about a year after it released. waiting 8 hours since midnight to get it when they opened. i was pretty disappointed that the ps2 didn't meet more than 50% of the promises that sony gave us, granted i still played the shlt out of my ps2 and still like it.

its a simple fact that sony hypes up stuff to a huge extent and fails to deliver. i'm not being tricked this time around ... but i'm sure i'll end up gettin a ps3 at some point cause i like every console genreally speaking.

that said, i'm sure i will buy a PS3 when they are available, granted they aren't

I'd like that link for future reference. I know too many people who think that the PS2 kept all it's promises.

*sigh ... Fine ... here is one.

let me quote some of the "important" parts ...

You'd expect such a powerful machine to deliver spectacular images rivaling the very best film clips or 3-D animations you've ever seen, and it does. (Video game images are made up of lots of little polygons, and the PS2 can draw 75 million polygons per second). But PlayStation2 is not content to be just a gaming machine. It also wants to be your DVD player, and in the near future, your favorite little home computer.

And why not? The PS2 has built-in USB and FireWire ports[/b, a 24x CD-ROM drive and space for a standard 3.5-inch hard disk (which can be added later). It has a fast Ethernet port that can connect to the Internet through a cable modem or DSL line.

I think it's safe to say that the PS2 is the most powerful computing package ever offered for $299.

It won't run Windows or Mac OS. You'll have to wait for software and "firmware" upgrades before the PS2 can reach its full potential. But when those upgrades come along, you'll have made yourself a pretty sweet deal. For families that have not yet purchased a home PC, or are looking to buy a second PC for the kids, the PS2 seems like a reasonable choice.

just search google ... there are tons of other promises that were never met.

I really don't understand your point.

He's only saying that the PS3 will be capable of rendering a video game at 120fps, and he makes it clear that televisions aren't yet capable of supporting it. Seems pretty simple to me. He's not lying to anybody. In this sort of industry, products being made to support future advancements are not uncommon, in fact, they're extremely necessary. The PS3 isn't even out yet, so comparing its features to current televisions is a moot point anyway.

I'm not a fanboy, I don't intend on owning any next gen console. I just simply don't see your point. Are you like, stupid or something?

I remember reading a review article about home dvd players and they said that the picture quality from a sony ps2 was even worst than some of the cheapest set top dvd players out there. So basically, if you're going to be watching a lot of dvds, you should instead go out and buy a $30 dvd player from Walmart.

Still better than buying a video card that lets you play games at 60+ FPS.

its pretty easy to see into the next year (where sony has claimed PS3 will be released - spring 06, but it obviously isn't anywhere near a spring 06 release) as to where TV's will be. It's not like the system is scheduled to come out in 5 years. If it was, that'd be a different story.

Sony is even putting DUAL 1080P outputs on the PS3 ... DUAL ... do you realize you need 2 1080P TV's to even take advantage of that? atleast they are claiming thats what they are going to put on it ... we'll see Christmas 06' (my estimate when it hits the Japanese market) if any of these hype stories are true or not.

my point is to inform people of sony's hype, nothing more. people got sucked into the ps2 hype through sony's false claim ... i am trying to inform as many people about the PS3 features as possible so they can be aware of it themself. that okay with you?

i personally just find all these claims by PS3 hilarious.

The PS2 dvd playback was rated as one of the worst dvd players on the market. however you have to consider, when the PS2 was released, dvd players were about $150 for the cheapest player out there, maybe even more. The PS2 was $300 for DVD player + gaming machine. It's a pretty good deal IMO considering, at the time, what you were getting ...

*shrug* Yeah that's alright with me, if that's how you spend your time. It just seems like most people on ATOT already know all of this and are well aware of the marketing hype that's always so common in the gaming arena. Isn't it generally accepted amongst intelligent gamers that the abilities of the games themselves are always more important than the abilities of the console?

It almost surely is capable of running at a constant 120 fps in EDTV mode and probably for some of the simpler games in 1080P... Unless Sony can pull a spectacular rabbit out of their hat, they don't have the video horsepower to run the next gen full eye-candy games at 120 fps @ 1080P though. But they never said anything about resolution so I don't see what the problem is.

Same problem on the PC side, doesnt mean having the hardware render it at 120FPS is bad.
