Playstation 3 still can't display 1080i properly?

I first bought my PS3 around 3 months ago and had it hooked upto my Olevia 37H LCD and it works great. I had it set to 720p and had no problems. Yesterday I moved it downstairs and hooked it upto my Samsung HCP4741W via HDMI which is a 1080i TV only, it doesn't support 720p. I hooked it up and low and behold, it displays "Mode not supported".... so I look online and find a statement saying that if you hold down the power button, it will reset your display settings after three beeps.

Still doesn't work. I hooked it back up to my LCD and sure enough, it shows the menu allowing me to select 1080i. After selecting it on my LCD, I hooked it back up to my Samsung it still shows "Mode not supported".

After doing more reading online, it seems Sony's hardware scaler doesn't natively support 1080i, but was supposed to be fixed with a software update.

Does the PS3 support 1080i at this point? This is the first peice of hardware I have used in 4 years that hasn't worked with my Samsung TV.

Anyone know what's going on?

EDIT: Would using component cables make a difference? Is this a HDMI problem only?

No idea what the problem is.. I run my original 60gb PS3 -> HDMI (HDMI to DVI Cable) to my 1080i Sony RPTV.. PS3 is set at 1080i, and has always worked fine.

Yes, it supports 1080i just fine. It's how I ran mine for a long while (1080i-only). My guess is that you selected 720p AND 1080i in your display settings and that's what's tripping you up.

Long shot possibility: you're trying to hook up the PS3 via HDMI-DVI to a display that doesn't support HDCP.

Nope, I definitely unchecked 720p and only selected 480p and 1080i. Think using components cables might make a difference?

Idea: try unchecking everything besides 480p. If that doesn't work, then you break out the component cables.

I'm leaning towards the "your TV doesn't support HDCP" hypothesis.
