I finally bought the PS3 Slim. I was using their regular video cables and was EXTREMELY dissappointed with the image quality. So I'm planning to upgrade the cables.

Do the component cables vs. HDMI cables make a difference?

Yes I know that HDMI cables are the best but can you really tell the difference between the two?

I believe the slim comes with regular composite video cables.

If you have a TV that accepts HDMI, spend the 5 bucks and get a HDMI cable from Monoprice.com

If your currently using the composite cables that came with the system, then both component and HDMI cables are quite a step up.
What type of setup do you have? HDTV? A receiver?
Importantly, if you have a HDTV, and it accepts HDMI, get it. Especially if it is a TV capable of 1080p.

like stlcardinals stated, monoprice.com for cables. HDMI cables are super cheap. The ones I got for my parent's setup recently were super stiff cables but work like any other HDMI cable. I think if you go smaller gauge the cables will be far less stiff.

Get this cable if you want supreme quality HDMI home-made goodness coming out of your PS3. It's only $50 less than the Slim so there you go.

If you want to upscale DVDs or play Blu-ray movies at 1080p, then you need an HDMI cable.

What do you mean "regular video cables"? The PS3 only comes with composite cables AFAIK, which is SD only. The difference between component vs HDMI is debatable. Most people won't see anything. I just prefer HDMI for the above that I mentioned, plus less mess behind the TV.
I've never had image quality problems with my PS3 using HDMI or component. Dumb question but is your PS3 set up to display at the correct resolution for your TV? It should be at 1080i, which is the maximum res most HDTVs support. Have you calibrated your TV correctly as well?

Monoprice sells 6ft HDMI cables for as little as $3.56. I've use these with all my satellite boxes and they're just as good as the more expensive cables.

The PS3 doesn't come with component video cables...just composite (which only output 480i). Get an HDMI cable from monoprice.com, get that PS3 set up for HD resolutions, and you're good to go.

I wouldn't even bother unless it's Monster-branded. The link above for the $250 monster cable is all I use. I have three TVs in my house and have three of those cables. My life has never been the same since and I generally point and laugh at people who don't have that exact cable because they are newbs. That cable even upscales VHS tapes on an old 13" screen to look as good if not better than blu-ray on a premier LCD tv. Get it!

LOL Skoorb that's pretty funny.

As mentioned above, I just bought my cable from monoprice.com and it's working great so far, 1080p is flawless on my samsung 46" B750 set, although you will notice that a lot of PS3 games play at 720p though. The way the HDCP works though is that basically you won't be able to get the higher resolutions on blu-ray unless you have an HDCP compliant output, such as HDMI.

Definitely monoprice. Super fast shipping, no shipping price gouging, great quality cables. If I could marry monoprice.com, I would.

Just make sure to read the descriptions closely. It's easy to accidentally order an in-wall HDMI cable instead of a normal shielded one.

Pshaw...$250 Monster cables are for noobs. I refuse to spend less than $400 per foot for any cable in my home, including the electrical cord for lamps and microwaves! Let me tell you, microwaved burritos have never been so good!

Seriously though, I have noticed a difference in the very cheap Monoprice cables and the slightly more costly Monoprice cables. The ones that cost more are thicker and better shielded. I had some "sparkly" picture issues with the cheap ones, that I fixed by simply swapping the "cheap" Monoprice cable with a "less cheap" Monoprice cable.

OP, we're all assuming that you have an HDTV. If not, you really aren't going to get a much better picture with component or HDMI. It also depends on how close to your TV you sit, and how large the screen is. Do you know if your TV is 1080p, 1080i, or 720p?

The PS3 can output at up to 1080p (Blu-Ray), and can upscale DVD's (from 480p to 1080p).

I got a few $6 6 footers from MonoPrice and they have been great. No sparklies on anything from the PS3 to the 1080p LCD. Or when I had it hooked up to my monitor with an HDMI-DVI adapter ($3/pc on MonoPrice I think).

At some point I think I will just make a bulk buy from MonoPrice, 2 each of DVI-VGA, DVI-HDMI, DVI, VGA, HDMI just to make sure I have them laying around.

I'm guessing that my problem was caused by numerous cables and power cords in back of the TV, and the cheap HDMI cable was picking up interference. I actually tried 2 or 3 of the same cheap Monoprice cables, all with the same result, before I switched to the less cheap (and heavier) Monoprice cable.

I have a ton of cables lying around behind my TV also, so I picked up the monoprice super thick HDMI cable, it was still pretty cheap though relative to the monster ones at Bestbuy.

That's why Monster came out with the HDMI Double-Stuff. Twice the gold plating to make up for any TVs that don't have the gold.
