If they add 16GB of flash memory, take out the blu-ray drive, then hike the price back up to $500/$600 launch prices, then yeah, I'll complain. :p

There are valid criticisms for every console of this generation and every other generation. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a fanboy.

If the drop in size causes overheating issues, then yes... or if the price in increased.

You're looking at it all wrong! $600 seems like a lot for a game console, but really it's competing with the iMac.

Of course there are "valid criticisms for every console of this generation and every other generation". There are also some people who try to slam Sony/PS3 over anything, no matter if its good or bad. You can see such people here.

There also seems to be some people who will back Sony regardless of their history of piss poor business decisions. These people seem to have terrorist usernames and camouflage in their avatars.

I knew those shots of the box and system were too elaborate to be fake... though everyone else seemed to think they were.

still doesn't make sense to spend money on R&D to slim down the PS3, I seriously doubt it would coincide with a price drop

I think it would. Even though Sony isn't doing all that bad in sales overall worldwide (it isn't all doom and gloom like everyone is making it out to be), their price is still too high compared to their competitors. They are either still losing money or barely breaking even, so they need to bring something fresh to the market that's cheaper and "new".

Blah, I'm gonna quit now. I swear I'm not trying to turn this into a PS3 bashing thread.

I  my PS3.

I have a 60GB PS3 that I bought about 6 months after launch, so I'm in pretty good shape for BC, but I would hope Sony would release this emulation as a firmware update so that people at least have the option to play PS2 games off of the discs they own, instead of milking it for just online digital distribution.

I have a bad feeling that's exactly what it'll end up being though.

I thought they were fake because the PS3 slim showed in the pictures was butt ugly. Hardly looked like something designed by a company with years of manufacturing design. I've seen more exciting looking waffle irons.

If they phase the "fat" PS3 out, then it will probably mean a price drop. This has been true with both the PS1 and PS2 when they were slimmed down.

Also, as someone else has mentioned earlier, they've been reducing the number of components (and the size of said components) in the PS3 for a while now. The newest models have a smaller Cell CPU, smaller cooling, no card readers, no PS2 chips, etc. With a slim Blu-Ray drive, the PS3's "fat" housing is quite possibly overkill. So, not only is it likely that this will happen (as for July, I'm not sure about that), but a price drop is pretty much guaranteed.

We'll see how it turns out. That may have been nothing more than a cheap mock-up, prototype, or an unfinished case. I wasn't willing to discount the pictures based off the looks of an unassembled part of the case that may or may not be a final version.

But they've already spent most of that money. The current models already have processors with smaller die sizes, the PS2 hardware has been removed, there are fewer USB ports, and the card readers are gone. In addition, the Blu-ray drives have naturally been improved for uses in other devices (laptops, PCs, standalone players). So why not go ahead and make a slimmer model? Should be cheaper to manufacture and cost less to ship due to the reduced size and weight.

I like my monolithic 60GB PS3, and no one will ever take it away from me.

It seems that the important bit is the Graphics Chip not the Emotion Engine. So they need to file a patent on that part too. Also I was reading on GAF that on every PS3 firmware there are special files for PS2 emulation. These files are there even on the new non BC PS3's. Another interesting thing I was reading was that engadget Japan found out that Taiwanese firms have been awarded contracts to create the PS3 slim and ship it by early July. These Taiwanese firms are the same firms that made the original PS3s. So I guess the only thing missing (now that we have slim coming and BC coming) is a price drop.

Me too. I still think my launch version is the best version, unlike the 360.
