Does the PS3 sometimes suffer with artifacts on the screen or blocky graphics when playing movies?

I have heard of issues with the PS3 playing movies in MKV format because it prefers other formats like the Windows movie format. I have seen other reports that even with loss less audio it sometimes has issues with the Audio. There may be a workaround that can give you some improvements in quality.

How are you playing the movies and it what format?

I was just upstairs testing my Samsung LN40D550 and we were playing moveis saved on a back-up hard drive. The quality was quite good.

One thing you might look at is if the PS3 has a program that is designed to smooth out or improve the video playback. If it does you may try turning that off and see if it helps. DVD Disks also sometimes get smudges or scratches which can cause problems playing them. It does not take much to damage them.

the ps3 may also artifact if it's overheating and needs to be cleaned out
oddly enough, i think sony recommends vacuuming it?

it's a lot more work disassembling it to do a proper cleaning

For cleaning they suggest a vacuum because using compressed air may damage the blower fan they have in them causing dust/dirt to get wedged into the fan casing and cause it to fail (by causing higher resistance to spin the fan assembly).

To be perfectly honest, if you really want to clean it right and your PS3 is already out of warranty (which all are if you were an early adopter), you are best to disassemble the PS3 and clean it that way. If your is also a few years old, you should probably re-apply the CPU/GPU heatsink paste as the original stuff is almost definitely dried up and no longer functioning properly. There are plenty of "How to's" on this. If you do replace the paste, make sure you use something electrically inert like the Noctua NT-H1, or Artic Cooling MX-3.

I've had a PS3 for 5 years and I've never seen this with DVDs or blu-rays. DVD playback on my 360 gives a screen door effect sometimes,

With Netflix I'll see compression artifacts from the lower bitrate used for streaming, like color banding and blockiness.

Only with netflix, never with disc movies although my seating distance is pretty far (around 20 ft) so maybe there's microblocking and I haven't noticed.

I'm confused. Are you asking about a problem that you had 1-2 years ago? I asked about the type of video because if you're encoding your own videos that could potentially cause problems depending on which codecs/settings you use.

I think it was just playing a movie I could be wrong. I was not watching the movie. I was passing by. I don't know the settings. I use the xbox 360 for games, demos and possible game trailers . Maybe it was the standard DVD player or the Direct TV and not the PS3. However I may be mistaken.
