Do you think a refurbished Playstation 3 would work ok?

What are the best models to look for?

Are the ones with backwards compatibility good?

Are there any to avoid with consistent problems?

Do all of them have the same audio outlets? My receiver has both coaxial and toslink. It also has HDMI but I only have a SDTV.

I think the answer to most of your questions is this: Get a new slim. You get a warranty (Sony repair bills are hell) and a cooler, quieter console. Unless you have a library of PS2 games you're itching to play, don't worry about BC - Sony will be putting PS2 games up for download soon, or you could just get a $50 PS2 and it'll still be cheaper than a BC model.

They all have optical out on the console.

Thanks for your advice viivo. I didn't know the newer models ran cooler.

Here's a theoretical question. IF you were to buy a refurb model, what would be the max that you would pay?

I don't mean to make it sound like a warranty is a deal killer as PS3s, especially the slims, are quite reliable. Personally I wouldn't pay more than $220 for a refurb, as you have no way of knowing what kind of use it saw before. You might be able to find a good deal on the For Sale forum here.

Wow, I was thinking no more than $150 shipped. I'm seeing the older models go for over $200. If was going to pay that much I would certainly get a new one. I only wish they would go on sale more often.

I'll see if I can be patient and snipe one. I'll also try and keep an eye on the FS forum.

Thanks once again.

Repair bills are $150 for a slim and $180 (I think) for the 20GB & 60 GB with hardware PS2 backwards compatibility. I would not pay more than $150 for a used slim.

If you're buying an old PS3, the 20 GB / 60 GB are the only ones with full BC. Some 80 GB models have lesser BC that's partly done in software.

If you are buying new with a Visa credit (not debit) card, some of them double the Sony 1-year warranty so you get 2 years.

Thanks for the extra info Dave! Especially about the prices and the 80GB BC models.

I can just tell you 1 thing with certainty.... Do not buy ANY kind of refurb unit from a GameStop.

Game store returns (not saying which store, people like to keep jobs and all that) right now the return rates are about the same on all models (PS3)..

As mentiond the slim is lighter and smaller and cooler. I would recomend the slim just for the reason its the latest revisions, "should" be better, but only time will tell.

and for those that want and alwasy bring it up.. Wii is still the lowest, PS3 next and yep, the 360 still has at least 3X more returns per units sold... at least its not as bad as it was.. its improved alot.
