Well here in the UK the PS2's are now widely available, but for a whopping $450 (£299) :(
You Americans don't know how easy you have it :)

I've heard a lot of people saying that they've returned their PS2's within a couple of days of purchase, so are they really that overhyped?

at this point, i say dont' bother yet,
for $99, a dreamcast is the better bet in the short term, becaues of the larger amount of games that are out for it already, in the long run, who knows however, because sony could blow every other system out of the water. I look at it this way, i paid $3 for my DVD player (through the MCI deal a little while back) and now can get a dreamcast for under $100 with games, how much better can it get than that???? i think right now stick with dreamcast and see how X-box turns out

Will do! As long as you've got a plug converter :p
One question:

Do most games have Anti-aliasing (a la FSAA), because some of the screenshots i've seen are damn good, much better than i had expected.

I heard there are price cuts looming as well for the PS2. I'd wait.

Can anyone remember how long it took for the first N64 and DC pricecuts ? Then i can see when i have to save my money for :)

I seem to remember the N64 pricecuts being quite substantial (£300 --> £200?) so i'll wait i think

But does everyone agree that some games look damn good?

SSX (the snowboarding one) is apparently the best of its kind ever.
and that reworking of Motocross Madness2 with quad bikes looks pretty good too.
and then theres GT3.....

SSX is a GREAT game. I bought it a while ago and it's damn addicting. The only down fall of it would be the lack of play time. I went through most of it in about a week (playing like 2 to 3 hours per day).

With uni, i don't have 2-3 hours a day :)

i tend to play games in 15min bursts at max, so should last me about 8 weeks :)

NO DONT BUY IT...

i bought it before christmas, and all it is is collecting dust... a grip of dust...

i think it was all overhyped, and the machine still sucks.

If you want one, I'd say go for it. DC may be pretty much on the same level now, but 6 months from now, PS2 will be blowing DC away.

Six months from now you will have dozens of sexy Dreamcast titles that you love playing.

Six months from now you will have an amount of great PS2 games that you can count on one hand to play.

Choose yourself.

not that great an idea to buy a console when 2 competitors are nearing release. This rule doesn't apply if you have enough money for everything:)

Ok well think of it like this:

I was intending on upgrading my GeForce GTS to one of the NV20's when they appear. What would u chose, the NV20 or the PS2?

I absolutely love my PS2. The problem is there arnt many games yet. so people automatically assume that it sucks...

here are my favorites that I am still playing non-stop and probably will continue to:

SSX
Madden2001
Aqua Aqua
DOA2:Hardcore
Timesplitters (with friends only, alone its not too good ;) )
Super Bust a Move

at $300 I bought it, but I don't know if I'd pay $450 for it. That's too much IMO. Maybe you could get an American one and a modchip

One word answer:

Yes.

More than one word answer:

Get one (PS2) as soon as you can if you have to opportunity.
