My buddy has a ps2 and wants to get it on his cable connection. he is planning on buying a microsoft wireless router, and a microsoft wireless usb nic for his ps2. will this work, and the reasoning behind the microsoft router is because it also has a 4 port switch, for his desktop computer which doesnt have wireless. has anyone done this, or any information is greatly appreciated..

thanks in advance,

as far as the wireless USB nic for the ps2, the thing I see is unless the ps2 recognises the nic right off the bat, I don't see how you are going to get it to work

first off, how would you load drivers, secondly, if you are running any kind of filtering/mac protection, wep coding, there is no way to program that in to the ps2. My thinking is that you will most likely be better off running a cable from the ps2 to the router's hard wired connections.

Another ideal is to buy one of those wireless gaming adapters.

I have the wireless setup for the Xbox.

Your router does not have to be Microsoft. As a matter of fact I would suggest getting a Netgear router (802.11b). They are fairly cheap now and very reliable.

For the PS2 adapter either get the Microsoft or the Lincsys (they make one for Xbox and PS2 and it's been out for a while before the Microsoft one was out).

You wireless network can not be encrypted. It has to be open with no restrictions whatsoever, otherwise it won't work.

The wireless adapter will show itself to the device (Xbox or PS2) as a regular wired ethernet connection, so no configuration or drivers will be neccessary.

I'd stay away from the Microsoft wireless products, as I've heard about LOTS of problems with them (dropped connections, terrible range, etc.) and you can probably find another router\NIC for less.

OK So if i just get a wireless router, with DHCP enabled, I can just get a USB wireless nic and have no encryption and it will work?

Thanks

I contacted both Netgear and D-link and they both, independently of eachother, recommended a "bridge" and wireless router for a wireless connection for PS2 to broadband.
Sure, it costs more at $171 but I can also connect my laptop to either the bridge by wire or a pc card for wireless to the router.
