Playstation 2 networking fiasco...(Madden 2004 problem)

Alright, I have three things that require the internet in my home: two computers and my PS2. My router, a Linksys BEFSR41 Ver. 2.0 usually makes everything pretty easy but since my brother has gotten Madden 2004, we can't get online to play through the router. Another aspect of the problem is that I only have three CAT5 cables: one 20-foot cable, one 50-foot cable and one 6-foot cable. The 6-foot cable goes directly into the WAN port of my router so I then only have two cables to feed the three things that require the internet. My brother wasn't playing Madden 2003 for a while so I disconnected the cable, threaded it through my air ducts and to my other computer, that cable is there to stay. So now my brother comes home with Madden 2004 and expects to get online. So I disconnected my 20-foot cable from my computer and strung it over to the PS2 and plugged it in. We tried to connect using the network configuration file saved from Madden 2003 but after connecting to my ISP and trying to connect to the chat rooms, we got "interruption" errors and "time out" errors.

I then went in and messed around with the configurations. Now, I have tried every combination and nothing has worked. I use the ethernet broadband option and I say I'm not using PPPoE so I don't have to enter in my login information for my ISP. It then asks me to enter my IP address, subnet mask, and default router (gateway?). So I first entered in my external IP address, my subnet mask (255.255.255.0), and then entered my default gateway. When it asked me to enter my DNS', I entered them in also. It then asked me to test the connection so I select OK and it waits for a while then it supposedly is successful. When I start up Madden and try to connect, it'll get me past the ISP connection then the DNAS gets me a problem, something like a -611 error or whatever. So I go back into the configuration and mess around some more. Now, I've tried every combination whether it be saying I have PPPoE enabled, so I can enter my login information to letting the PS2 detect my DNS' and IP. I've tried my external and internal IPs, both allowing itself to detect the IPs or I assign them, both attempts didn't work.

My guess is there's something I'm doing wrong with the router's firmware. Some things I'm not sure on are DHCP and enabling it or whatever. I have it enabled and the MAC address is showing up under the DHCP table client list but I'm not sure if there is a problem.

I'm really confused on what to do now. Like I said, I've tried every damn scenario with the router but nothing works. The only way I can get on the net with the PS2 is by directly giving the cable to modem from the PS2. From there I use the options where I let the PS2 automatically obtain the IP and the DNS'. My router automatically obtains IPs but for some reason that won't work going through the router with the PS2.

I realize how wordy, complex and boring this sounds to you but I'm in desperate need of help here. I worked on this stupid problem for two hours straight and have gotten totally pissed. Thanks to those who respond. (Probably no one)

OK.... PS2 connects fine when hooked up straight to the cable modem, right ? That means your cable, your PS2, and your connection are all fine.

The problem must lie in the router. How was your setup before you but the PS2 back on your network ??? Were you using internal IPs ?? static or dynamic ??

I would setup up static internal IPs (this is how my PS2 is setup) on your network. then test out your PC connection. If you can get internet on your PC, then it should be the same for the PS2.

I would completely start over with the PS2, erase the network file from the memory card. Start from scratch.

I know how to set static IPs but what IP do I use? Does my ISP have to "support" it or something? It's an idea I haven't tried so maybe it'll work.

Alright, I fixed it, simply pressed in the Reset button. Let everything automatically find itself, now back to normal. 🙂

Internal IP addresses are 192.168.1.XXX or 10.0.0.XXX --- xxx being a number from 0 - 255

Your ISP gives your router an external IP address. Your router probably has DHCP enabled, which automatically gives your PCs an internal IP address, but you can give your PCs any static IP you want, as long as it's from the internal IP list. Your router from time to time may get a new external IP address from your ISP.
