I was just wondering if such an item exists? I really love the feel and responsiveness of console controllers. I would rather play games, especially sports games, on my PC because the graphics and AI seem better. The usb controller I have now just seems a tad sluggish when compared to a console controller? One last thought, if it doesn't exist then does anyone use the logitech 2 rumblepad and if so how does it compare against a console controller. What I have now makes madden 2005 on the PC just irritating. I appreicate any advice, thank you.

the answer to your question is a resounding: ABSOLUTELY!

Heck, i have 2 of them. They both work flawlessly and the only reason i got the second was because the first didn't support force feedback.
Ontop of it, they're cheap as heck and they beat the sh*t out of regular pc pads (as you noticed). The second one i got was the SmartJoy plus.

I got mine from consolestop (http://www.consolestop.com/product_info.php?cPath=31&products_id=80). So head over there and order one. Many others have it for the same price (some may have it a dollar or two cheaper) but i'm pretty sure i did my research thoroughly (including shipping costs, time it takes for it to arrive, etc.) and if i picked those guys, must be because it was the best choice.

I picked up one for my brother off Ebay for $12 shipped. It's a dual adapter and lets you hook up 2 PS controllers at once.

yes get the dual adapter, dont get the radio shack ones unless you are not using analog, the RS ones don't support analog. these are what i would get, i have both the RS and the lik sang, lik sang lets me plug in 2 controllers and use analog controls fine. awesome!

I have the RadioShack one. Haven't had any problems with it and the analog works fine.

Yeah, analog or digital mode on my Sony dual-shock PS1-era pads work just fine on the Radio Shack USB adaptors. However, I've had minor issues with some 3rd-party ones. Best to stick with official Sony pads.

Wow, Lik-Sang has a whole bunch of these things: link

I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick up a couple of PSX to XBox/GC controller adaptor cables that I saw at Wal-Mart for $12. I went back the next month and they were gone, not even stocked any more. :(

So, anyways, with all due respect to all the posters that came after me, their posts are pretty much useless, just follow my advice and get the smartjoy plus from consolestop.

I'm in the market for a PS2 adapter myself. One thing I'm seeing though is a lack of custom button mappings for any of them. People seem to be having trouble with the mappings of some games making them tough or impossible to play (EA sports games, such as FIFA come to mind). Currently I'm using an Xbox hack that I did myself and with the right drivers it allows any button mapping you like.

Is there such a device/driver for the PS2 controllers?

I have the smart-joy adapter, and have tried several others in the past. The smart-joy has been the best one I've used so far. Other brands will occasionally stop working and you have to re-insert the USB adapter to get it working again.

I've never used the drivers, so I don't know about button mapping. All the games I use it for already have custom button mapping, so its never been an issue with me.

I don't believe the smart-joy adapter allows button mapping through the included software, but I may be wrong.

One of the games which I play, FIFA, doesn't allow button mapping in the game. Playing this with the Xbox controller just doesn't cut it (I need those R/L buttons).

I actually own and run that website and am also an Anandtech member and I just wanted to say what you said was pretty damn funny and yes we are a good choice all things considered.

The Smartjoy Plus is also a great adapter, if you are looking for something cheaper this adapter works just as well in my experience and is about 2.00 cheaper:

are any of these adapters good for DDR pads? I got stepmania and running my DDR pads through parallel adapter, but I'm looking to add 2nd pad, and there's no 2nd parallel port on my mobo...

For the Playstation pads yes. If you want to be totally sure I'd go with the SmartJoy Plus but both adapters have what's called a dance mode where you hit start+select+up for three seconds and the adapter accepts the input specifically for a dance pad.

We also have a 2 player adapter that is advertised to support dance pads but I honestly have no experience with that one at this time, if you want to buy one of those I'll be glad to give you a total refund including shipping if it does not work, just as long as you let me know if it does work and how well so I'll know for future inquiries...

Looks like I missed this one but I believe Joy2Key will do what you are looking for. It's great for the few games that just aren't designed to work with gamepads, and I'm sure there are other interesting uses.

I will probably put this on my website as soon as I get the latest version and test it out. I know I tried to use it with Half Life 2 for the racing mod and it seemed to work well.
