No luck with media player here. It seems to only do music as others have noted. In short, useless. My guess is Sony is in no hurry to support video on the PS4, unless you buy it straight from them. A money grab.

It was advertised as "USB media player" what part of that says videos will work? The complaints about no video support are OK, complaints about this update not supporting it are not because they never said it would play video.

You can now play music stored on USB storage devices. Connect a USB storage device containing music files (MP3 or AAC) to the PS4™ system, and then select USB Music Player (USB Music Player) from the content area.

it does say music player, but also "Supported filename extensions include MP3, MP4, M4A, and 3GP.". I've never seen an MP4 audio file. I am sure they exist, but it's a common format for video. Everybody equates mp4 to video.

The USB Music Player will support files including MP3 and M4A audio, and MP4 and 3GP video.

Last year Sony said it was looking into MP3 and DLNA. I think it's understandable we had expected a media playing on USB to finally incorporate video, since even Son said it would play MP4, which is super common and everything under the sun can play it. Including a PS3.

Sony needs to realize a large portion of its users never use Twitch or any other social whatever the heck it does and put in things that would take very little effort to put in anyway. It must be hilariously easy to write an app for the PS4 that plays MP4 videos. They just don't want to for some reason.

Why don't you write the app if it is that easy? I'm no programmer but I don't imagine the new OS is that simple to work with.

I remember the interview with Yoshida where he said when they designed PSN they never made a way to change your name. People think it's like editing a database and once you make the change it just lets everything pull that name from the database. It isn't like that and it's harder to do than people think.

sony has a track record of promising things that never make it. it's been that way since the ps2, not sure why anyone would think they would all of a sudden change with the ps4.

I liken it to the change to the XB1 from being always online and requiring kinect to function at all. Many people said "all they have to do is flip a toggle to turn off that requirement" when in actuality it required a lot of coding and a day one update that had massive OS changes. Things that seem easy aren't always easy to make work.

Yeah but then if you want to go back into the game chat audio it used to be a simple toggle switch. Now you have to click into chat settings or whatever. This may not seem like a big deal but if you play destiny with a friend or two on chat but then are meeting people in game to play with it becomes pretty annoying.

This is a big step backwards in UI design. Not sure why Sony engineers would think *more* clicks is better.

Amen - a ridiculous change!! It was just a toggle on the party chat before... now you have to go to to party settings, chat priority and toggle it to game/party... then back out. Whoever thought this is a good idea was drunk!

Actual problem, the OS is monolithic in that everything is basically one single codebase. To add *any* feature or fix *any* means pushing out a new build of the OS because it's not fully componetized. Benefit? It's pretty fast. Downside? Iteration vs. Microsoft and the Xbox One is terribly slow and almost zero chance they'll catch up in software.
