Playstation 1

Hi everyone,

Yes, I still pull out the old playstation every now and then, but some of my games skip on cutscenes or freezes up during gameplay. When I check the back of the discs it has scratches on it, some are light and others pretty deep. Not sure how it got there since I keep all my games in their cases. 🙁

1) Some people mention about applying toothpaste to the scratches, does it really work?

2) What about making a copy of the game? Would that help or just the same with the original?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You won't be able to use a copy without a modchip or some type of swap device. As far as the toothpaste, I have no idea.

yes toothpaste does work. but be warned, it'll make the area look more scratched. it's probably very easy to do it wrong and make the disc entirely unreadable

Guess I can forget about the copy part. I'll give the toothpaste a shot but I'm afraid of damaging the disc.

Also, I found many different CD Repair Kit. Does anyone had any experience with these type of products and which ones to recommend?

it could be the playstation drive. On my friend's first playstation, when it first came out, the drive died pretty fast and he ended up having to flip the playstation upside down for his games to work.

The reason that I remember is that the drive was worn on one side or something and flipping it over caused it to use the other side more often. I'm not sure wtf that means or if it's true. But flipping the PSX over did wonders.

I've been using a product called Merlin's Disc Magic which works quite well.

Yeah I'd use cd repair kits before the toothpaste. It works on the same principles but its much less abrasive than toothpaste. Toothpaste should really only be used if you're that cheap to not get the proper stuff to repair it with. I hear the Disc Doctor things work pretty well.

I heard about that method also and it's the first thing I tried, but doesn't work (tested the games on the PS2 and same results).

I have the later generation PS model (without the parallel port) and I thought it fixed the flipping problem? I read about it in a magazine or website a long time ago.

Anyway, I'm about to dump everything back into the closet even though I have a sudden urge to play those games, just not worth the trouble.

What about playing the ps1 games on a emulator? If you can successfully rip the games to a disc image (such as .iso or bin/cue) you don't have to worry about the cds anymore. For windows the best is epsxe (you have to screw around with plugins to get it working right though), or for ease of use there is pXS. look here for more info:

Hey Evander,

I really appreciate your suggestion, but no offense I rather stick with the PS console. I don't know, it just doesn't "feel" the same on a emulator (well to me anyway). Not to mention I'm too lazy to mess with plugins. I prefer my comfy bed and tv instead of the chair and monitor. 🙂

I understand, though it works great for me with my setup (wireless trackball, easily movable sofa/chair, 1024x768 with tv-out and graphic filters, psx clone pad but with 6 face buttons like Street Fighter, etc.) I'm too lazy to drag out the psx except when i need to play games that require special controllers.
