I'm looking for a decent online repair service for my kids' PS2. I'm guessing it is the classic "disk read error", because it doesn't read any disks.

Any recommendations would be helpful. The system is over 2 years old, and is the slim version if that matters.

Thanks

Sometimes you can fix the drive or clean the laser to solve that problem, but many times it's often not worth the trouble. If you know the version of your laser, usually by searching along with your model (SCPH-XXXX), you can swap that out.

What's your model PS2?

It is a SCPH-75001

I'm hoping to find a place that can fix it for around $50+- shipping. That's about all I am willing to spend on this.

I've tried cleaning the laser with a q-tip & alcohol. And taking a can of compressed air to the innards, but no luck.

I've seen a few places that say they will service the console & replace the laser if needed for around my target price. I'm just wondering if anyone else has used a service like that before.

Thanks for responding RaiderJ. A few weeks ago someone asked about modding a console & I inadvertently gave someone else's name, thinking of you. I knew there was someone here who knew their stuff about consoles. But I blew the name. Oops.

Mod-Chip.com has a replacement optical block for $35. With shipping that should be around $40.

It probably wouldn't be a difficult replacement to do yourself if you don't mind working with small screws and a couple of smaller ribbon cables.

Thank you sir.

Edit: Another question though, the manual on their site list a soldering iron as one of the required tools. Is that correct for replacing the laser? Because I suck at soldering.

Is this the slim ps2 or fat ps2? My old fat ps2 used to do this and I used the ghetto fix for it. Opened it up, found this white gear, and moved it a few notches either way. It's trial and error and it's not permanent from the results i've gotten.

It is the slim version. I don't see any white gear so I'm gonna have to pass on that fix.

I just tried ordering a new laser from that site, but it took a dump. I'm going to wait & ensure that I wasn't charged for anything before trying again.

Possibly - I think I've heard about a couple spots that need to be unsoldered before the laser can be used. But, I've never replaced an entire laser block like that.

I've done lots of business with that site over the years, so I'm sure if there are any problems Ostermann will help you out.

If that's the case then I'm out. An electronic device + Me & a soldering gun = a dead device.

Thanks for the help RaiderJ
