A display / playback device that will upscale? (I.e. hook up your computer to your TV and assuming your TV is 1080p it will be upscaled to 1080p.)

If you want to convert them to HD, that isn't going to happen. SD will always be SD whether upscaled or not :)

If you want to watch them in true HD, go buy them on Blu-ray along with a player.

he's right. you have a 1080p display and now you need software that will upscale your content (will look better than just stretching it out to fullscreen). download media player classic home cinema (found in numerous codec packs) and within the FFDshow decoder options you can tell it what size to scale to. there are tons and tons of options to tweak in the decoder you'll want to look at/read about (as far as making SD look as good as possible)

This.

"Upscaling" is just marketing BS in my opinion.

So, since I already have a 1080p LED, all I need is Soundforge's Media Player Classic Home Cinema + those FFDshow reg settings?

you were expecting more to it? there's really no euphemism for it. you're just doing a simple resize in realtime.

bingo, you don't get magic detail, upscaling is just a zoom/resize. you can't shine a turd.

I've seen videos look noticeably better after messing with ffdshow. I wouldn't say 480 to 1080p difference, not even close. But it still looked clearly better. Depending on the algorithms used you can zoom without loosing as much IQ as without the filters. On a 24" at a close distance OP should be able to fiddle with ffdshow and get to a point where normal DVD's look quite a bit better.

yea true, but its mostly deartifacting it more than bringing in extra detail, mostly its fancy remapping of pixel/detail to a higher resolution.

Its all about resolution. Your dvds are encoded at 740X480. Your television has a native resolution of 1920X1080. You have a finite number of pixels to work with. Whatever your using to play the files should be able to scale the video to fill your 1080P television, but there will be a noticeable loss of quality, since all it does is run the video through an algorithm that fills in all the gaps with made up pixels after stretching it out.

You could go through all of that trouble to upscale your 480p DVD's, or you could pay the $67 for a BR drive & $17/mo. w/ Blockbuster & have all the BR movies you want. I know they might be going out of business soon, but their online program & 5 in-store trades isn't half bad. Be careful with that 1080p bug though, because once it bites you, you won't want to bother with those 480p films again.

Prior to setting up my BR multimedia center, I went through a similar phase where I wanted to save money & cut a few corners, but the movies still looked like crap at the end of the day (compared to my BR movies). So I paid the $67 & haven't looked back. My DVD's can stay put & collect dust for all I care.
