Playing online with modded XBOX?

I have a 360 that has been modded a few months back, and have been using it happily online for a while now. I've never attempted to play a pirated game online, and haven't been banned -- yet.

Last night I bought Forza 3, and I want to buy a Live card to purchase all the DLC for it. Will I get banned if I try this? What if I try to play Forza online? It's a retail disc.

Also, if I do get banned, can I wipe the drive clean, and move the drive to a new 4GB XBOX? I've heard people sticking their old drives into new consoles and it will detect fine.

Any advice?

It'll probably work fine for the next couple weeks until the fall update comes out.
Only the machine gets banned, so you should be able to buy stuff and redownload it on a new XBox if it comes to that.

What is a modded xbox that doesn't play backups/pirated games? Can you play emulators or something on the 360?

Damn. I don't mind shelling out for a new xbox. I really want the wi-fi function anyway. Just don't feel like getting a 250GB model...

You could do what I am doing, I got the 4gb slim and then bought a used 120gb 360 hard drive off ebay for $40 and will take it apart and put it inside the 360.

It plays backups fine, but I don't play the backups online. Anytime I connect to live, I take the games out of the drive.

I don't really know why I modded it anyway. I only pirated like two games and it was more hassle than it's worth to get it running.

so much misinformation in this thread....

there is absolutely NO way to tell if or when you will be banned. i know people who have launch 360's modded who still play pirated games online.

they ban people in 'waves'. you won't randomly get banned if you get banned. you will be banned with a bunch of people, at the same time. so far they have only done like 4 or 5 of these waves i believe. i was banned in the wave they did right after mw2 came out, and that was on a modded 360 from when mods first were available.

that said as well, they usually do a ban wave after a major release, which in the past years has coincided with major dashboard updates as well.

it's a big game of cat/mouse in general on what and how they can track down. ill also say when i was banned i wasn't keeping up to date with the latest firmwares, and my 360 could play 'bad' rips.

no one really know 100% what they ban for, some people think they can read the firmware, but the main theory people tihnk is that they can detect the disc in there is not retail disc.

I ended up buying a new arcade box. I absolutely love it. Looks so much better than the old one.

I stuck my 60GB drive into the new XBOX with zero issues, and have been loving Forza 3 so far. I am not as good as I thought I'd be in Forza (although I did get 32/50 achievements and 64% completion in like 3 days...lol) but it's fun until GT5 gets out.

Only thing that absolutely ruins F3 for me is the rewind feature. It's not needed, and aggravating to even know it's there.

My old XBOX is still unbanned and sitting quietly now.

From what I come to understand, (and I've had a modded launch for awhile that has yet to be banned), is they ban on larger dashboard updates. I figure it is only a matter of time before my modded console gets banned, but I have an unbanned one I usually play so I am okay with that.

yea usually the 'major' dashboard updates are right around the fall when a major release also comes out. all in all its a huge cat/mouse game that will probably always been like that.

i just know when i was banned, i got banned literally like a day or 2 after MW2 officially launched.

i was playing a copy online the weekend before as well, and i didn't have updated firmware, so i deserved to be banned. i also knew i had the game prepurchased and another 360 that isn't modded, so i wasn't really too concerned about being banned.
