Playing on a PS3 your way might not be as easy as you think it would be :(

but bare with me here, the problem is a bit deep :D

The only reason that I am now into console gaming is that now, FPS games on the PS3 can be played in a graphics detail close to that of computers and with keyboard and mouse and because I got a new 40GB PS3 for $299 + tax which is not bad at all (well thanks to the Sony Visa card deal anyways)

Only Unreal Tournament 3 ATM supports direct mouse and keyboard connections and has hardware acceleration and all that good stuff on the PS3.
However, for the rest of the games (who's developers weren't smart enough to see it coming to build the support in game) there are adapters such as the MaxShooter or the equivalent SmartJoy frag accept a ps/2 mouse + ps/2 keyboard connections then do the translation to the PlayStation game pad connection (which in turn I hook up to a PlayStation 2 connector to USB adapter), giving the user a relative FPS experience to that of a PC.

Not bad at all, I tested it out with UT3 (circumventing the built in keyboard and mouse support just to compare) and Resistance: Fall of man.
The results were not bad, the adapter allows you to highly reprogram keys and mouse buttons to your taste, relative in game tweaking usually takes care of most issues (spare mouse acceleration)

The problem:

The problem is that I use the PS3 on my main Desk, having it hooked up to my 22" Samsung LCD via HDMI and to the keyboard and mouse for web and XMB through a 4 port Cables To Go KVM
I like my KVM, it does exactly what I want it to do. However, the Keyboard Mouse adapter for the PlayStation only accepts PS/2 input. My KVM, hooks the main keyboard, mouse in the back (which are PS/2 BTW) and the rest of the USB peripherals hooked on the front of the KVM, to the machine it is currently connected to through just one USB cable!

A second problem
is that I love using my Nostromo SpeedPad n52 with my FPS games on the PC. However, the MaxShooter doesn't accept USB devices and simple passive adapters don't work on the Nostromo SpeedPad even though it is recognized on any PC or OS as a simple USB keyboard, but I guess it doesn't have a built in PS/2 mode to switch to.

What would a practical solution for here?

Well since I have the PS3 on my desk as another PC would be, I would love to be able to take that USB out cable from the KVM and hook it up to an active USB to PS/2 adapter which should work.
However 2 issues arise from that:

1- Active USB to PS/2 adapters cost anywhere from a $75 to $150 a pop due to the low low demand for them OUCH!
2- Would my Nostromo SpeedPad n52 which is a USB connection to the front of the KVM be directed properly to the keyboard ps/2 port in addition to the main keyboard (which would be great as I need both to do so due to XMB on the PS3)?
3- According to this video demo, the guy is saying he tried Optical Mice however no dice only roller ball, the main Mouse on my system is a USB wireless optical, which might not work too, in that case I would have to hookup an extra USB roller ball mouse to the KVM which is a minor inconvenience for a geek such as me who wants things to work perfectly.

This solution might be feasible if I could find someone who could sell me an active USB to PS/2 for a price that is not rape here and If I can make sure that points 2 & 3 would be taken care of!

A second solution I have been contemplating is not bad at all financially.

I could use an el-cheapo 2 port PS/2 KVM switch in coordination with my current 4-port KVM

The input would still be the main keyboard and mouse, the first output would go to the main 4-port KVM and the second output would go to the MaxShooter adapter.
However issues are still there:

1- The KVM needs to be small, have NO HotKey support (Only manual) so it doesn't intervene with my main KVM
2- Not have huge messy cables, as I only need to do a 1/2 > a foot connection in reality
3- What would happen to my Nostromo USB gamepad then?

A better solution than a KVM would be an input switch.
Issues:

1- Can't find a PS/2 switch
2- Can't find a PS/2 switch with USB too

the closest thing that I found to what I need is a USB switch but that's of no use

It's a funny situation that I am in, it's just that the solutions out there for the most part are much more expensive than the switching process is worth to me so ....

for the time being I have a roller ball hooked up directly connected to the adapter and I switch my main keyboard in between the KVM and the adapter manually. However No luck with the SpeedPad on the PS3 so far.

So can a genius out here give me a product suggestion that is reasonably priced or better yet come out with better solutions than what I did?

Thanks in Advance!

LOL, I did say "smartasses welcome" in the title I guess...
You see, I am trying to get the PS3 to do something it wasn't quiet designed to do. It's only a matter of time before more developers follow Unreal's example and start having mouse and keyboard support as more PC gamers migrate to consoles (or at least that's what I am hoping for).
Worse come to worse, I will just use an el-cheapo KVM switch to switch my keyboard from my main KVM to the MaxShooter adapter. I guess I could go without my Nostromo on the PS3 for now, as it's turning out not to be worth all the trouble.

Buy a USB keyboard and mouse. Problem solved? Even on the high-end, we're talking about < $100 of equipment, and it'll probably improve your gaming. The only game you'd be losing out by ditching your MaxShooter is Resistance - is it really worth the hassle?

And COD4, , Half-Life2 EP1 EP2, Team Fortress 2....you get the idea.

Had it been a possible compromise for me to just use a USB keyboard and mouse, my KVM is already hooked to the PS3 for non game usage (except UT3 as it supports KB & M) and I use my keyboard and mouse straight from my KVM to the PS3 through one USB line to the front.
