when playing mp3's Sound is delayed, or slow. It starts fine, then goes all stop start, almost like the cpu is maxed out, but this happens even when nothing else is running. Another thing i find, is that when i start the computer, and first log in, running both win xp and win2k pro, the whole desktop seems to freeze for about 15 -20 seconds before it all comes back to me - seems like the shell is hung!

Any idea's on what could be causing this behaviour?

Thanks for your help

have you installed the latest via 4 in 1's? have you checked the soundcard manufacturer's website for updated drivers for that device?

does this happen when playing a cd or only mps3's? what program are you using to play them? Also that thing where it takes a while to logon, that happens with most logons from microsoft I believe, especially if you have a virus checker installed, also when you are running your music did you check in task manager to see what else was running?

I'm not sure how to help with the audio problem, but I'd like to note that I'm having a similar 15-20 second 'hang' on a WinXP machine. This particular machine does have Norton Anti-Virus installed and starting up with the computer. I'd disable it, but knowing hte surfing habits of the person who uses the machine, it'd be best to leave it on even if it does have an initial temporary hang.

Are your CD-Roms working properly?
Is the music on your hard drive or CD?
What about going to control panel
bring up your system devices
right click on each drive (cd,cdrw, etc)
see if the "properties" will POP right
up or if there's a lag.

hi all,

sorry for not replying, i've been otherwise distracted. anyway, the saga continues, i checked the creative labs support base, and there was one article there about ensuring that the card had two irq's assigned to it - 5 and 10. I couldnt quite get this to work without ripping out most of my other hardware, and eventually had the one component of the card assigned irq 10. However, i couldnt see the other component of the card that the article discusses anywhere in my device manager, and i checked my brothers machine ( identical mobo and sound card ) and it also didnt show the second component. Basically in my device manager, i had no Creative Miscellaneous Devices part. Anyway, suffice to say, even with pretty much everything else out, and irqs 5 and 10 free, still no joy, plenty of stutter on playback.

This happens whether i use Windows media player or winamp. Playing either mp3 or cd's.

Its beginning to really bother me now... I know when i have all my other components back in the pc uses irq steering, and i'm thinking i may need to disable this - or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks for you help..

Wave sound stuttering and repeating with SB Live!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Keywords Sound, Stuttering, Repeating, Wave,Interrupt, IRQ,BIOS,Control Panel.
Possible cause Incorrect resource configuration
Applies to SB Live!, SB Live! Value, SB Live! Player 1024, SB Live! Platinum, SB Live! Platinum 5.1, SB Live! Player 5.1

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Problem
I get stuttering and repeating sounds when I play wave files with the SB Live card.

Our Advice
This problem occurs if the resource configuration of the card is set incorrectly. The SB Live! card takes two interrupt requests (IRQ's) one is IRQ5 which defaults to the SB 16 emulation and one of the higher range 9,10, 11 for the SB Live! entry under Sound Video and Game contollers in the Device Manager. This allocation may be reversed causing the repeating sound problem.

To check the IRQ allocation:

Select -Start - Settings - Control Panel - System - Device Manager - Creative Miscellaneous Devices - Creative SB Live! SB 16 emulation - Properties - Resources.

Ensure that the IRQ setting is 5. If another device is using IRQ 5 you can remove it temporarily and reinstall it after the installation of the SB Live.

By Selecting the very first icon (computer) in your Device Manager you can view the resource allocation for all your devices.

In the SB Live entry under Sound Video and Game Controllers the IRQ setting will be either 9,10 or 11

It is important to note that resources for PCI devices can only be allocated at a BIOS level. Therefore for further information you may need to refer to your system documentation
