So how can I get rid of those black bars.....just kidding

I bought a Panasonic DMP-BD55. I love the picture and all the additional functionality. There's just one thing I don't get or the manual does not make clear. With my old DVD player if you stopped the movie then turned off the machine, when you started it up again it would start off where you left off. With my new player if I stop in the middle of the movie, when I start it up again I end up at the beginning of the DVD. It does not bookmark where I was watching the movie. I skimmed the manual but It looks like my new player does not do this.

Ok what I'm I missing?

You aren't missing anything. Of the 60 or so Blu-ray disk I've watched, I think it's worked on 2.

Bingo. IIRC, some BD-Java discs have an internal bookmarking system, though.
