There is a compass in your journal that helps point you in the right direction.

Yea, Metro2033 is pretty hardcore. I am having to change my playing style from other FPSs so that I can stay alive. The strategy of rushing in with guns blazing does not work.

That is a great tip on the compass...thanks!

If you don't very carefully burst fire, you're going to find yourself dead. Ammo = currency, so put every single bullet on target and don't waste any.

I have to give that game a try again. Last time I got irritated by some bugs, and how retarded the human AI was.

I LOVED metro. In fact I restarted it again recently and while its fairly linear on the hardest settings its HARD!

refreshing chance from the easy crap we have been spoon fed..

Anyone else notice how jerky the movement was in that game (and I;m not talking about FPS, my system can handle it very well) ? The movement was so opposite of what fluidity should be. Great graphics, though, and a good creepy atmosphere, but that game and the STALKER games had the oddest stuttering combat movement.

You can skip the compass, there are giant masking tape arrows on the walls pointing which way to go next.

I love this game too and horror games usually bore me to death. They had a small development team and marketing budget, but proved its still the technology that counts. Can't wait for the sequel to come out next year. I only wish I could play it in 3D.

I never noticed any jerky playback or had any nausea problems with the FOV although I have read many people who had. Weird...

I'll give a specific example, and this applies to the STALKER games as well: when you crouch the movement is instantaneous, like you teleported to a crouching position. It's a very immediate and unnatural movement that is not like in any other games I have played in the last 5 years.

I actually found it *too* hard. I don't like having to replay stuff like literally 6/8 times through because I keep getting killed. Makes me lose interest fast. Maybe I suck, but that was on like the average difficulty level too.

The weapons system is a bit iffy and the monsters clip everything including your character making close combat ridiculous. Supposedly the sequel will have a better weapons system. Try playing on the easiest level and practice killing them from a distance. I'd also recommend just avoiding the shotgun and see if that helps. Traditionally the shotgun is your main weapon in corridor shooters like Doom, but its pretty bad in this game.

It was pretty good but it had a lot of wasted potential. They should’ve used anomalies and artifacts like Stalker. Also the weapons were clunky and some of the gas mask sections were tedious.

If they make the ammo widely available it will ruin the game, also I wouldn't recommend a powerful shotgun, everything in the game can already be dropped from one shot, except for the demons and the librarians, but there are more powerful options to deal with those already.

The one thing I'd personally like would be for the game to be open world instead of linear, but I guess that would be quite an undertaking for the developers to handle. Too bad, that would be a slap for Stalker.

I'm not saying they should change the shotgun or give more ammo. Only that if you have trouble try some other weapon then the shotgun.

Metro was designed to be the most advanced stereoscopic 3D game on the market today. Its engine enables hundreds of different light sources in a scene, particle effects, depth of field, physx, and other effects that will cripple even high end computers at max settings. The gas mask, tunnels, and everything else are there in part to enhance the 3D effects which are second to none. They would have to completely rebuild the engine to make it open world and with all those effects it would take a supercomputer to run the game.

It gets boring and repetitive quite quickly.

I find that happens in a lot of games - most recently in Serious Same and The Witcher. The kicker is always wondering if the rut is temporary or will be sustained throughout the game

Those are actually two of my favorite games. :D Serious Sam, while repetitive, never ceases to be satisfying and it always gives me an adrenaline rush. The Witcher is great because it has one of the best storylines in an RPG, and IMO, the combat is very satisfying as well. Different strokes for different folks though.

Edit: Oh yeah, Metro 2033 was probably my favorite game of 2010.

The thing that bugged me about Metro was the stealth system, like I felt as though it prioritized lighting too much over movement and proximity, as though your opponents are deaf. Also it's a bit ambiguous about certain information, I remember I had to google how to pump the first pneumatic weapon I found lol

Google is your friend. I'll take a little ambiguity over all the arcade style flashing lights, bells, whistles, and tutorials you can't shut off.
