Playing HD Video over the gigabit network.

I've got an HD video on my Linux file server and I'm playing it though the gigabit network on my Windows machine. The video is totally fine but the sound is really choppy. Any idea why? I'm using VLC.

During regular file transfers, I do an average of 30 MB/s. When I'm playing the video, I'm probably doing less than 1 MB/s...

Only thing I could think of is some kind of codec problem or setting?

Although it might be QoS and jitter. jitter is a variance in the timing of the arrival of the packets and tends to affect voice more so than video. Can you try with no other devices attached and just the client/server? Also post the model of the switch.

Hmmm... the video is fine when played through WMP, but off on VLC. Where do I find the cache feature?
