playing grim fandango.... question?

I just played grim fandango for a couple minutes but wtf, why is there no sound? the very first item that I pick up (the letter) is read, but everything after that, the dialogues don't have sound. is it supposed to be like this?

Speech is supposed to be through the entire game.

Have you got up to date sound drivers? Any game patches?

i fixed the sound problem by running it in Win98 compatibility mode.

but I have a another problem now. I got past the first cutscene (going to the poisoning scene to get Bruno), and I noticed the cutscene is really jerky. the movie jerks and the audio cuts in and out constantly. this happens to every cut scene! grrrr

I really want that game but cannot find it anywhere for a decent price. Let me know if you want to sell it.
