Playing EQ2/Doom3/HL2 with 1gb RAM...

I'd like to know that with my current spec's, would another gig of RAM make a difference when I play EQ2/Doom3/HL2:

2.4ghz Pentium 4 (non-OC)
1024gb RDRAM (PC800) (4x256)
Intel (Lexington 2) Pentium 4 mobo
Sound Blaster Audigy w/ IEEE 1394 sound card
Western Digital 80gb & 120gb 7200 RPM hard drives
Visiontek nVidia GeForce4 Ti 4600 128mb video card (non-OC)
Lite-On 40x 12x 48x CD-RW
Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM
CD-ROM 52x
Windows XP Home Edition

I do intend to upgrade the graphics card to something like a 6800 GT.

That 6800 gt will be bottlenecked by your processor. I run a system with a p4 2.4 and 512 mb rdram with a regular 6800 and am definitely bottlenecked by the processor.
I think anything over 1 gb is overkill.

Well I don't know about HL2 and EQ2, but in D3 my ram usage never hits one gig, so upgrading for that game would be pointless.

I am pretty far through HL2 and the highest I have seen is 843MB. I do not recall D3 ever reaching 1GB either.

EQ 2 benefits from over a gig of ram...

Look at the available memory. Besides normal system programs the only thing running in this shot is EQ2.

1.5gb would be a nice amount as well but if your running dual channels then 2gb might be the way to go.

I got 2gbs of Corsair value ram for $300 delivered so the cost was not all that bad.

Yeah, but I have to buy RDRAM and its killing me to potentially shell out over 200 bucks for one stick of 512. =/

Then dont buy it, I answered your question EQ2 CAN benefit from it.

The odds are though that 1gb will get you by just fine but if your going all out then you know what to do. 🙂

You're probably already aware of this, but just in case... RDRAM must be installed in matched pairs, unless you have the extra-bizzare 32-bit RDRAM. Probably time to just start setting aside some money for a DDR-based setup if you want more than 1GB 😱

I agree here. RDRAM is ridiculous. You could easily swap out the board and buy new DDR and still wind up in the same price range. Plus that leaves you with some RDRAM to sell to someone that would love more of it at a fairly decent price so you technically can come out ahead.

good call Interitus...

I would also look to upgrade the video card as well. Unless you are running a tonne of stuff on your system (e.g., I run Folding@Home and Seti@home while running firewalls, anti-virus, web browsers and games all at the same time) more than 1GB is really overkill at this time. OH! And forget EQ2... WoW is where it is at! 😀
