Playing DVD Freezes computer

I just installed a new Hitachi 4x GSA-4040B Drive DVD-RW Burner CD-RW Writer. I am using WinDVD 7 as a player. When I try to play a DVD my system locks up. CTR-ALT-DEL show System Idle Process using 99% CPU usage. Rebooting causes an error saying my CD-ROM is in the slave position and needs to be moved to the master because the DVD-RW is not being recognised! The LED on the unit will stay solid until I unplug the power soure from the DVD itself. What am I doing wrong?
