Playing DIVX/AVI movies on a DVD Player?

Is there a way to do this? I know some dvd players will play VCDs, but is there any dvd player that reads Data Burned CD's? Or a way to convert DIVX/AVI into VCDs?

Most people use tmpeg (I always screw up the spelling, so it could be different) encoder to turn divx to mpeg2 for vcd. Roxio easy cd creator (platinum) is the easiest program to burn video cds that actually work.

Getting them to actually work in your DVD player is a different story. Not all players can handle them. Some can do it with CDRs but not CDRWs. Others can't do CDRs, but can do CDRWs, and even then, some require a special color disc, some do silver, etc.

As you can tell, I've tried all of this and found it to be NOT WORTH THE BLOODY HASSLE. But your milage may vary.

I've asked myself this very question!

After quite a bit of research and quite a few backed up DVDs to DivX, I haven't seen nor heard of home players out there that can read data burned CDs other than mp3 of course.

Alas maybe someday.

There are some Apex players that will read straight mpeg and mpeg2 files (basically, vcd and svcd files without all the special encoding to make them real vcds or svcds).

As noted above, tmpeg is the best encoder out there. and free as well. However, if your source is available on dvd, I strongly suggest you simply plunk down the money and buy it. I spent many days trying to encode an episode of the X-Files. I say "days" because unless you have the fastest machine on earth, the encoding process and take many hours. Needless to say, screwing it up is not fun. What's really screwed up is that I was doing it just to see if I could make a quality vcd (I own the first four seasons of x files on dvd). The result, using the best encoders per vcdhelp.com was much less than impressive (poor vhs quality).
