Playing Chess vs a computer

I'm not great... But I can usually hold my own against any casual human player. But, I found a freeware Chess program for my PocketPC, and I won on difficulty level 1! 😀

Hey, I know it doesn't mean anything, it was more of a moral victory. I've never beaten any version of Chessmaster, a standalone game, or even Battlechess on the C64!

That doesn't say much unless we know at what ELO it's performing. Chessmaster can perform at various ELOs, so certainly you should be able to beat Chessmaster at some level. It's not likely that you beat Chessmaster itself as it performs at something like ~2900 ELO.

I can usually beat opponents and computers that play at a 1700-2100 ELO, but beyond that the positional nuances require a lot more dedication than I can seem to muster.

I was beaten by Computer Chess on my Atari 800 🙁 (fear the 1.x MHz power of the 6502 processor! )

The game is just too much like work for me to want to spend the time really learning it. After a day in the code mines I'd much rather become the Vault Dweller or go on a Killing Spree!! than do more pattern matching and depth-first search.

Haha I remember that game! I was never really interested in chess but I played Battlechess just to see the cool animations 😀
