Playing Burned Video Files on A DVD Player

So, I've never tried to burn a vid file and watch it on a DVD player. What do I need to do to burn an AVI or MPEG, or other formats so that they will play in a DVD player or my PS2 as a DVD?

Do I need special software to put it in some format?

Thanks in advance for the help.

yes. whats your source. if its a vcd or avi its not dvd quality. remember that. unless u got some crazy full hdtv mpeg 2 or .ts wmv hd craziness.

Advanced Search > DVD of Software forum, add "AVI" or "MPEG" if you get too many hits, check archived threads for dozens more if you don't find enough.

My DVD player plays VCD and MPEGs.

But whenever I am burning something to take to a friend's house, I use Nero's DVD Authoring option. It converts the video files to the standard DVD format.

I use a program called DVDit!
I can create a menu system using graphics and buttons, and then insert a video file, and it converts it to something my DVD player likes.
