I posted in Troubleshooting, and am working through it. But as a seperate issue, are there any ports that i need to forward to play the game. Right now the router has everything pretty much locked down.

I opened this port 16567 type UDP on my router and it has worked fine for me since BF2 was released. On page 19 of the Battlefield 2 manual it lists all the ports that are used.
Hope this helps

You shouldn't have to but common home routers seem to be quirky as fvck. If you are experiencing connection-related problems, it couldn't hurt to forward them.

edit: I've never had to once to play an online game (running a server is different). I guess I haven't been on a router for more than a couple years, but even during then I've played a lot of games. One time we had problems with Age of Mythology over the LAN and tried forwarding but that wasn't even the problem so I later turned it off when it worked.

Well im getting "sudden bursts of lag" right now. And that is while im playing, not hosting a server. So i guess forwarding things wouldn't do anything.

With BF2, sudden burts of lag usually means the game is hitting your paging file, and is getting a sudden slow-down as a result. Some people swear you need 2GB of RAM to play the game without the lag if you are using medium-high graphics. I find I can easily play the game without lag with a static 64 MB page file and 1 GB of RAM. The key is to close any background apps before starting BF2, and getting rid of any unneeded background services. When I start BF2, I'm usually only using 85 MB of RAM at the time. Another thing, setting texture quality to medium helps with the memory usage and in turn stops lag. There is a very small difference between the high and medium texture graphics, so there aren't major IQ losses.

BUt would that show the "There is a problem with your connection" AND make my guy jump around for a couple of seconds while, i guess, it catches up with what is going on. This happens in RTCW:ET and other MP games as well.

Hmm, you didn't mention the connection problem message before. In that case, I'm going to assume you have packet loss problems. This could be your computer, the router, or even your connection.

Well i have a network thread going to try and resolve something like that. I have gone through a whole mess of tests and stuff.
