Playing an MKV file on 360.

I want to try and play this file on my 360. top.gear.polar.special.720p.hdtv.x264-bia. gspot says that its an MKV file. I tried putting it on my videos so my 360 can see it and it wasn't able to.

If the 360 can't play this, is there a way to convert this into a wmv file?

Yes. GOTSent. Converts it to mp4.

360 can't do 5-channel audio with mp4, though, so you're stuck with HD-quality video and 2-channel sound.

I'd take lossless video over 5.1 audio every time. But that's just me.

meh...you can always set the compression ratio high enough that it may as well be lossless.

Do you know of any good software to convert mkv to xvid directly? I'd be interested in testing it out myself.

I don't know of any free ones that don't require multiple steps. There's River Past Video Cleaner. But, I just found this with a quick google search of mkv to xvid.

I am trying to use GOTsent...All I do is pick the sourcefile and the destination and click convert? Is there anything else I need to do before that? Is it going to stay HD?

That's it. You can also choose to split it into 2 files (if it's larger than 4GB). Also, make sure your AC3 settings are set to 2/0 audio - as your 360 won't play back anything else.

It will keep the video untouched, and just convert the audio.

Well something went wrong. Zune player says that it doesn't support the file....

Edit: I Windows Media Player is able to play the file but Zune can't...also my xbox 360 can't see the video on my PC...

1: Is the file >4GB? The 360 (and probably the Zune) cannot recognize it.
2: Can the Zune even play an HD mp4 source? I'm not familiar with it.
3: Is it 2 channel audio?

If your 360 can't even see the video - it's not the audio. It could be the file size, but I doubt it's larger than 4GB.

It is most likely an issue with whatever program you are using to stream it from your PC - maybe you aren't refreshing the file list? Can you put a new xvid file into the same directory and play it?

The file is 1.43GB. I haven't tried an xvid. Before I was trying to get an HD Diggnation episode to play on my 360 but my 360 could not see the video on my PC.

Interesting... XenonMKV is practically a 1-click solution. It doesn't even do any transcoding other than converting the audio to 2-channel. I've used it a few times with no issues.

What are your computer's specs? I've got a friend that can't run XenonMKV either, but he has an AMD based PC whereas I have an Intel machine.

Also, do you happen to have a PS3? The PS3 is much better for use with converted MKVs.

I have an intel based PC. I have a 360.

It craps out when its trying to generate MP4 file.

i've never had a problem converting mkv files to mp4 with gotsent and streaming them to 360. then again i just use the wmp library instead of zune.

wmp will play the file that seems to be converted but it says that it doesn't support the type of file but will play it anyway.

So apparently the new GOTSent (0.23) includes mkv conversion to mpeg2/xvid.

This intrigued me as I could keep the 5.1 audio source. So I did a test on an HD movie.

mp4 vs. xvid:
-file size is roughly the same (the xvid is ~600megs less - 3.4GB vs 4GB)
-quality is better on the mp4 (obviously), as it keeps the original source uncompressed. But I must say, the xvid isn't half bad - though it's definitely noticeable - in particular with dark and fast-motion scenes.
-sound definitely better on the xvid with the 5.1 audio.
-conversion time is a massive difference - maybe 20 minutes to go mkv->mp4, whereas the xvid took around 12 hours.
-maybe this is just me, but streaming the mp4 was a lot smoother than the xvid - like when fast forwarding and whatnot.

I'm not sure which I prefer now. I dig the audio, but the time it takes to convert it and the reduction in quality is disappointing.
