<< UNION CITY -- The father of a James Logan High School sophomore seeks $1.5 million in damages and the dismissal of the school's basketball coach after his son didn't make the varsity.

Lynn Rubin sued the New Haven Unified School District on Nov. 27 because his son, Jawaan, was told to return to the junior varsity after being asked to try out for varsity.

The family had rearranged its schedules to accommodate the varsity team's practice times, the suit said.

Coach Blake Chong, who cited a policy limiting sophomores to JV when he cut Jawaan Rubin, didn't consult with the parents before cutting their son, according to the suit. After Jawaan confronted Chong about the decision, he was dropped from the JV team, the suit said.

Chong refused comment Monday.

Rubin's older son, Janou, starred under Chong at James Logan and is a sophomore guard at UCLA. The father said he calculated the damages based on potential wages lost from his son's possible pro career.

Wow! We can sue for inconvience because we anticipated a promotion that didn't come through? LOL

They should reinstate the kid to varsity and have him ride the bench.

It says they rearranged the schedule to make room for varsity practice times. I wonder what a high-school sophomore could possibly do that rearranging his schedule could be worth 1.5 million dollars.

The word asinine comes to mind.

<< Wow. And I never thought American law suits could get any lower... :( >>

If I recall correctly, Canada has the family suing a vending machine company because their drunken son tried shaking a pop machine and ended up pulling it on top of himself and ultimately killing him.

Now THAT'S a pretty damned retarded lawsuit.

These people won't see a penny. The only damages these people may have suffered was the rearrangement of their schedules to fit a high schoolers extra curricular activities, hardly anything you can sue for. The courts will not award a judgement based on future earnings because the future just cannot be predicted.

If the court did rule in favor of the parents and gave them $1.5million then what if the kid gets killed before making a cent in the pros? Do the parents have to pay the money back?

<< Jawaan Rubin >>

A poor black boy who didn't make the team. He cried to mommy. Mommy saw this as a chance to make some easy money and get out of the "hood". Too bad "Jawaan" and his mother are too ignorant to see that fact that he is just not good enough to play varsity ball.

I think I'll watch this one carefully. If it goes through, then it won't be too much of a stretch for me to sue my college if I ever fail a class. Very few Sophomores make Varsity anyway, sounds like this kid has a swelled head.

i think these people are idiots. not just for the triviality of it all, but this kid probably would have made it next year had they not sued. now it's pretty much a given he isn't going to make it.

James Logan? That school is near me. They were like our rivals when I was in High School. I'll never forget when our then crappy team beat their team in the last game of the season. You would have thought we won the state championship or something. LOL.

Naw, you can't have him be so lethargic. His parent might sue...

Instead, make him responsible for ensuring the water bottles are full and the kit is washed and folded for every game. :D

<sigh/> Yet another vain parent attempting to prove the worth of their useless spawn.
