It's the benchmark used by all manufacturers, and I clearly stated SHIPPED in the OP.

But not in the thread title. :p

I haven't been able to try the Playbook yet, let alone the Transformer. Those are the two tablets I'm most interested in.

sales != units shipped

From RIM's perspective, it is. In the words of Charlie Sheen, "I've already got your money dude". Plus, as has been mentioned, this is the metric everyone uses, I don't know why people get so concerned over it.

Anywho, stronger sales than a lot of people expected I imagine. And this is just the US-only WIFI version, they'll be releasing internationally + 4G versions this summer, plus the holiday bump...I can certainly see them hitting the early estimates of 4-6 million units in 2011.

I played with a playbook last night at BB. It was nice. I'm still interested to see how HPalm's WebOS3 stuff turns out.

Depends on the company. Usually the company not in the lead will always note shipped numbers to "inflate" their rankings. Some companies traditionally show shipped numbers regardless of market position. Others like Nintendo traditionally lists sell through numbers regardless of market position. Both are equally valid ways to report numbers with the understanding that shipped numbers may not actually represent the amount sold to consumers.

Shipped products usually have a return policy. If you're a manager at Bob's Electronics, you don't want to order 50k units for the chain of Bob's stores and be stuck with them if they don't sell. That's your ass on the line. Granted actual return policy details may vary and it wouldn't be out of the question for RIM to limit how many Bob's Electronics could return.

Agreed that it is pretty decent sales numbers. You don't ship that much if stores aren't selling most of the units. Not sure they'll be able to hit 4-6 million for 2011. They'd need to close to double those sales numbers through the rest of the year since we're already in May. Keep in mind that you'll have a bunch of stronger Android tablets coming into the market in the 2nd half of 2011. Especially as it gets near the holiday season. Basically shiny new toy > shiny old toy.

I think his thread title is technically accurate. The shipped number does not represent the number of PlayBooks that are in the hands of consumers; however, resellers pay the manufacturers per shipment... so RIM is technically selling them to resellers when they ship them.

Oh I know, I'm just poking fun because he said "I clearly stated SHIPPED in the OP" yet the thread title says sales. ():)

Apple only quote shipped numbers and they're winning in the tablet sales race.

probably because almost every ipad they ship sells

RIM:
"Checks at 180 Best Buys show 14% of the 16GB sold out, 71% of the 32GB sold out, and 84% of the 64GB sold out"

APPL:
"Checks at 180 Best Buys show 100% of the 16GB sold out, 100% of the 32GB sold out, and 98% of the 64GB sold out"

Nobody expected the PlayBook to sell as well as the iPad.

However, most did not expect it to outsell the Xoom or the Tab. It has exceeded the sales expectations of most. You don't have to be #1 to be successful. Apple might not sell as many Macs as MS does licenses of Windows, but that doesn't mean they should stop making them.

I was considering the PlayBook, but now I have my eye set on the 8.9" Galaxy Tab.

PlayBook screen size was too small for me. I think around 8" will be perfect for a tablet. The Galaxy Tab also has a 1280x800 resolution.
