7 years old build:
-Core2Duo 6600
-2GB ddr2 800
-ATi RAdeon X1900 XT (it has 2 dvi ports)
-ViewSonic VX2025 monitor (hooked up through VGA, the DVI seems to be busted)
-Samsung HDTV located in another room -occasionally used as an extended display hooked-up to the other DVI port (there's an AVR in the middleof the chain); it's a 6ft 28 AWG cable to a 40(?) ft 22 AWG cable to the avr
I used to have WinXP32 and videos in Mozilla were laggy. I applied new thermal paste on the cpu, it seemed to improve a bit but then I switched to Win7_64 and Chrome and the problem went away
After a couple of months the on-board sound died, so I bought a $10 USB-sound adapter that I plugged into the monitor. The problem was I couldn't use the TV anymore
I decided to get a new video card and use that one for audio through hdmi. I bought a Radeon 5450(?) but that one was buggy so I returned it.
So got a 6450 which isn't buggy, but when there is a lot of movement on the secondary display there's an horizontal line (usually located at about 1/3 from the top) that basically splits the image in two. I don't even think that there's a line, it's just that the image looks chopped in two
This happens in both Chrome and VLC and on the secondary display. If I make the TV the primary display it works well, but then it gets bad on the monitor. Actually I've seen that happen on the primary display a couple of times too, b
I thought the card was too weak and I tried a 750 GTX, but it's the same, maybe not quite as often (or is just my imagination), but same thing anyway
So, what is the problem? CPU? Memory? I don't think it's the long cables since they work fine when the TV is the primary display
