Play Station

Hello My son keeps damaging his play station games I buy him, and I have to buy them again. Short of murder what can I do to protect my investment. In past I was told by a friend in the past that one can copy these disk and with the purchase of chip from somewhere one can get a backup copy made by a cdrw to work and run in the play station. 1. yes/no 2. how and where to find chips needed. Any help??? and thank you in advance. Donna

Hi Donna, you may want to check this site as well plug in mod chip

The "plug and play" mod chip may, or may not work out to be easier.

First, the original "modchip" is a tiny little chip that has to be soldered onto the circuit board of the playstation. To make it work, somebody will have to open up the playstation and solder the tiny chip onto the playstation. Before you do this, you need to check what the model number of your playstation is. They are in the 5XXX's, 6XXX's, 7XXX's, 8XXX's, and 9XXX's, I know that some of the newer 8k, and 9k models had some problems with mod chip compatibilty, or they just flat out did not work with a mod chip.

The nice part of having the mod chip is that once it's installed, you don't have to worry about doing any annoying disk swapping like I'll describe in the next section.

The second link that I provided you is to a mod that plugs into a port in the back of the play station. One problem is that not all playstations have the "parallel" port in the back of the unit. If your playstation does not have this port, then you'll have to go with the original "modchip". The other problem with the plug in device is that before you play a game, you have to fool the playstation into thinking that it has a "real" playstation game in it.

To do this, you'll put a real playstation game into the playstation, leave the door open, and use a thumb tack or pencil to hold the spring on the upper right hand side of the cdtray down. Pushing this spring down will make the playstation think the door is closed and will let you turn it on. Once you get the spring pushed down, you'll have to turn on the playstation and let the mod device take over. It will load for a brief time and then will prompt you to put in the "backup" or burned copy of the game. You can then play from there.

If you are having problems with your son destroying the games, then the second option may be a little more "clumsy" than having the internal chip. Check that modchip site and cross check it with the model number of your playstation and see if there is an available mod chip for it. If there is a mod chip that is compatible, do you have a friend that would be able to perform the soldering of the chip? It could be fairly expensive, ~$50 if you have to have it professionally done.

Also, once you have the mod chip installed, there is not a guarantee so to speak that game will work flawless. Some playstation games are so big that they will not fit onto a normal CDR. You can often experience jitters and jumps, and even lockups in the games if you don't have a perfect burn. From my experience, I had about a 60% success rate in getting games to burn properly. But then again, this was 3 years ago and I don't know how things have improved or "dis"proved since then.

If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, I as well as others would be happy to answer them.

Hi and thanks for the help will take a look at the unit and will see what model it is but I think if i remember right it is a 5xxx, and I'll look for the port in the back of it. Again thanks for the help. Oh I will look for someone at work to install the chip if that is what I end up having to do. take care and peace Donna
