Play Station 2, or?

Should I buy my daughter (14) a Play Station 2 for the holidays so her grades will plummet, or should I select another platform that is guaranteed to make her dumber than a box of rocks? She has a fast PC already (with a geforce 2).

I've been out of this loop for quite a while, so be nice. :)

Thanks,
Robert

I'm not sure I got a ps2 myself but after seeing the 3-4 nicest games on the gamecube I dont think any other game on any other console can stand up to nintendo 1st paties.... I would go gamecube.

All of the systems are exploding with games over the next couple months (GameStop has 56 games coming out September 19th), so you can't make a bad choice.

I'd recommend a GameCube for younger gamers though.

Thanks Sera YX! Great points! By younger gamers, you mean under 21?

Thanks,
Robert

If you get her a game system and she really enjoys it, that'll ensure she'll have no shortage of nerd guys drooling all over her in a few years.

Diskop:

I've already installed a 50 cal. machine gun nest in the front yard. :)

She's 5'7" tall, drop dead gorgeous, blond, blue-eyed, a top swimmer and rower, can do 20 chin-ups and benches 125 lbs. 10 times. Also a Duke TIP scholar (math) with a 4.0 GPA. Other than that, she's just your average girl....

Thanks,
Robert

eh... I don't know... PS2 has A TON of games to choose from so there is the plus there... but the audience for PS2 is mostly male's the age 16-24. Gamecube (Nintendo's system) is a bit younger range and Xbox is competeing with PS2 but they don't have the range of games yet.

Its kinda a toss up between the Playstation2 and Gamecube but Gamecube is cheaper and I'm a Nintendo fan at heart so my vote would be to get a Gamecube :)

Neomits: Nice points. I think she'd probably prefer some of the Gamecube games NOW, but will the new PS2 games include any which would appeal to young women? She is changing rapidly....All the PS2 games I've seen, with a couple of exceptions, appeal to those who like killing things. :)

well heck. Duke TIP is a good program. you must be in the triangle then. what school does she go to? I have a younger brother who is single ;):D

seriously though, go with the gamecube. More games that can be played with other people. also, it is really small, which is cool for some reason.

Smolek: She hasn't been playing any games the last few months because she's been so busy, but when she was younger she hosted a Tribes server. :) I think she's drifted out of the paramilitary schtick and into the soft and fuzzy thing though. I really don't have a clue what she'd ultimately like. She's 14! You know, that's an impossible age. Parents don't have a clue.... :)

yeah... most PS2 games are Sports Games, FPS (First Person Shooters), or Fan Genre (Final Fantasy and the like)

Like BigBen said, Gamecube has lots of multiplayer games (or party games) games that are fun to play with a couple of friends. My sister (who is now 18) always loves playing mario kart whenever we play that on the old Nintendo64 system.

Also small is cool :)

WOW... a Tribes player.... I never would have guess that an attractive girl under the age of 14 played tribes, none the less hosted a server....

LOL like the others have said... watch out for the nerds.... we are a cunning type :p

chess9; try buying her the following and see how she likes it:

(1) Gamecube
(1) Wavebird wireless controller
(1) Super Mario Sunshine (out at the end of August)

IF you do get her a PS2, I'd recommend the following games:

ICO
Kingdom Hearts
FF10

Neomits: Yeah, I think you and BigBen hit on the key. Multi-player would definitely appeal to her. Hmmmm....Maybe we should wait until September and check out all the new games before we decide?

Maybe an xbox...

If she was still into the shooters type then xbox is better suited. it has a number of games out now (100 this week) and coming in the future (200 by end of the year) and of the 3 is the most advanced and best value for your $$$ (10gb hard drive, ethernet card, dvd player). Plus it looks to have the smoothest online play (if desired), broadband only, launching on Nov 15th to play people from all over.

Oh, Smolek, you are one evil fellow! Online multi-player!!!! Hmmm-hmmm. Boy, that even sounds gonzo to me! :) I was surprised no one mentioned x-box sooner. We have broad band too (road runner).....

Sheezh! What a smorgasborg! How do you guys ever get any homework done? :)
