Hi,

I was wondering what would be the easiest way to set up something where I can put music and movies onto a hard drive and then play them with any device such as an Ipad or iPhone. For example, mediafire.com, I can upload music and then have the mediafire app on my iphone or ipad and it will play no problem as long as I have WiFi. Also to my receiver sound system since it can pick up wireless from devices.

I would keep doing it this way but my issues are :

1. Takes too long to upload things, especially since FIOS isn't here in my area when I can just put 500GB of media on a hard drive in a couple hours and call it a day.

2. Space / Storage. I have to pay per month to use a virtual drive like Mediafire's.

Is there anything I can do to have some kind of interface to use to be able to achieve this?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Are you talking about streaming over LAN or over internet? If over internet... you better have some really good upload speeds if you intent to stream HD video.

I think you are saying you don't want to upload everything, just be able to access the stored files on demand, right?

Plex or PlayOn, but you'd still be limited by your internet's upload speed.

Yes, pretty much. Just have a hard drive, throw all my media on it and be able to play it on my devices or receiver sound system. I use mediafire like I said and my upload doesn't seem to be a problem. It buffers a song as it plays the song. Like in the first 10 seconds, the song will already be halfway buffered, if not done. The only issue is uploading all the stuff to mediafire. It would take me ages.

For a budget solution, check out the new chromecast audio. It can play files from your phone/tablet, or it can play local files by using cast-enabled apps. I haven't personally tried it.

For the more seamless but pricey solution, check out Sonos. It's more of a powered speakers on steroids, but it can be hooked up to you AV system if desired. I fought buying Sonos pieces for a loooong time, but I finally gave in and now I'm part of the Sonos cult. It really is good enough to justify the seemingly absurd pricing.
