Have an old Dell Dimension 2400 with a small drive, want to get an external drive to put MP3s on it and play from there since there are a lot. Is this ideal? I figure I can always plug the hdd into a netbook too and play the MP3s from there if I felt like it.

Would something like this, meant for backups, perform good enough?

Yes it works great!

That's exactly what we're doing and the source is PCM not MP3 so the data rates are higher and it works without a hitch.

Works fine, i have all my MP3's, pictures and a few movies on a external USB drive and take it everywhere with me. Great to have at a friends house or something to listen to the music you want or watch some movies as everything has usb nowdays. And its a 5400 rpm notebook low power drive 320GB, doesnt even need power cable. Its not fast but more than fast enough for mp3's/movies even HD 1080p movies.
