Play Half Life 1 first?

I know it's the wrong forum, but I'm leaving work in 10 minutes to buy a game and this forum has much more traffic.

This question is geared towards people that have played both, so please mention if you've played both games.

I have never played Half Life 1 before. Should I play that first to get the backstory, or can I just jump into Half Life 2? I guess the concern is as follows:
Does Half Life 2's plot stand on it own?

Then play HL2.

DUDe! lol, when you buy Half Life 2, it will install Steam, which in return will GIVE YOU Half Life 1 Source, which is Half Life 1.... for free!!! you can play that, then play Half Life 2. Dont waste ur money on Half Life 1 when you get it for free

The store package is the equivalent of the Bronze package from Steam, you cannot get Gold/Silver in store.

Buy it via Steam, then load only HL:Source.

Once you have that, you can play it while the rest download.
