Platinum or White Gold for my wedding band?

Big price diff... Just looking for a plain band, comfort fit, size 8.5, 5mm wide.

$178 - White Gold
$650 - Platinum

The white gold turns after a bit, but can be re-rhodium (sp?) finished, making it look like new again...

The platinum cannot be refinished, but can be rebuffed, effectively lasting forever.

The cheap bastard in me says "White Gold!" It also says to me that you'd be takin' it for that size at that price.... even if its a good deal. What MM are we talking?

Looks wise they are very similar. Platinum is a bit heavier, or it was to me.

I lucked out for mine - in a way. The one I liked was a bi-metal 18k yellow gold / platinum band, but as you noted the platinum adds a significant price premium. So I ordered the same design, but with white gold instead of the platinum. Long story short - first ring comes in with terrible quality issues, sent back. Get it back - and it's a different ring. One week to wedding. Not much else they could do, so they gave me the original ring with platinum for the price of white gold. 🙂

I thought that the bride traditionally buys the wedding band for the groom? If so, then let her figure out what material to get and don't expend any brain cells on the matter. When I was married the band could have been made out of kryptonite for all I cared.

she gave me the choice, which ever i would prefer. She is not rich however, so i dont want to bankrupt the poor girl (i would chip in for the platinum). Just dunno if its worth it, or if i would be unhappy w/ the white gold.

Not a big fan of the Tungsten/Titanium bands, a bit too lite in weight and dark in color for my tastes.

my college ring is white gold and my wedding band is plat..personally it is about comfort and budget..I prefer plat for a wedding band but understand why many don't ...either will suffice. Good luck

how are they both holding up?

I went with white gold. I never take it out (unless I'm working with electricity) so It's gone through oil changes working on my car you get the idea. When I hold next to my wife's ring it looks like it needs a replating but by itself it looks pretty good with a little of the yellow gold showing it looks a lot like platinum.

$195 titanium!

Well, titanium isn't ferro-magnetic (unlike some white gold pieces which use nickel as a component) and is hypoallergenic, so that's two pluses for it.

Me and the wife have titanium for wedding bands. Silver would not work and as was juts said has other good things. Got ours from eBay for like $30 each give or take.

I went with white gold. It wasn't so much about the money as it was about the weight. The weight of the white gold band was negligible. Wearing the platinum band, I actually noticed the weight. I preferred not being constantly reminded that I was married! 😛

I'd go with the white gold, and get a life-time protection plan that would cover the rhodium plating down the road. Where are you looking at buying it from?

My best friend had a two tone platinum and yellow gold ring. He took it off of his finger when he washed his hands in the airport on the way back from the honeymoon, and left it in the bathroom at O'Hare. Gone. He ended up going back and shelling out another $800 (or so) on another ring.

I'm thinking of getting a plain white gold, or even a titanium band when I get married. Hell, I might order two. Go cheap, if you loose it, it won't be the end of the world.
