I'm not really a fan of the square plate... but as I'm looking for new dishes, it seems like all the designs I really like are only on square plates 🙁

I'm in the same boat.

Is there a technical name for the plates that have a lower level so stuff doesn't spill out?

Fancy square plates win.

Oval or square doesn't make a difference to me. I care only about 1.) will it fit in the spot in the cabinet I have designated for plates. 2.) will it hold a lot of food 3.) will it burn my hands if I pick up the plate to bring it over by the TV

So, my preferred shape is Stoneware plates that are an inch or two deep ... like big shallow bowls ... as they tend to not burn hands, and they tend to hold lots of food.

I own round but I like both.

I prefer a deeper dish, such as a soup bowl, for pastas or anything else with a sauce.

Damn left handed, red headed, step children! The wine glass is on the wrong side. The napkin is on the wrong side. The fork is on the wrong side. AND, square plates are ugly. Did I mention your mother dresses you funny?
