Plasma TVs

Mmm...I've been looking at the Plasma TV market lately. Anyone here have one? I've heard there is a big difference between the ED and HD ones is that true? How much can you get a 42" HD one for nowadays...?

RossMAN's GottaDeal has been listing 42" for $1500 - 1700. ED is supposed to be quite good for current DVDs and TV programming (even in HD) but might not be so good for blu-ray / HD-DVD once they arrive.

I'm probably going to hold out for DLP (better picture, no burn-in) but the new 50" Samsung DLP with true 1080 HD resolution go for $3500. When they update the 46" version it should be closer to $3000.

EDIT: oops, didnt realize you had Plasma TVs in the topic..lol, anyway info for whoever. Good plasmas run for at least 3000. Anything below that is not worth it.

check out Tweeter, its the CHEAPEST place...and you can Bargain down. I was able to get mine tax free during the tax free weekend plus osme additional bargain. They WILL price match and up to 60 DAYS. BB and CC suck

Ok besides that, i prefer HDTV. Do you want a PLasma? or DLP or LCD? You need to go to stores and check out wht it looks like. Then check out the reviews of the tv. www.avsforum.com is a good place, but too much info there. There are gonna be 50% ppl who would like ur choice, and the rest would deny it. Especially if you are choosing between a DLP and LCD.

For DLP and LCD hdtvs, the newer models JUST came out (like in the past couple weeks and few are coming in the next week). So if you buy an older model, you can REALLLY bargain it down.
I got a 46" Samsung DLP for 1560 total. Its HLN4663W (last year's model). They have a newer model, HLP4666W and HLP4667W. They are about 700-1000 more expensive. Similar with Sony LCD hdtv. btw, to me choice was either a Samsung DLP or the Sony LCD. I needed a 42" variety, but the deal I got on this 46 was better than the 42. I think tweeter has the sony 42 for abut 1500-1600.

If you just want a projection hdtv, you can find those much cheaper like 1000, however quality of DLP and LCD is uncomparable to me.

Rest is up to you...go check some tvs out, and maybe you will have more questions or opinions.

Same here. I'm waiting for a 42" DLP with 1920x1080 resolution to hit $1,500 before taking the plunge. Should be another 1-2 years wait.

EDTV's are not worth it. if you get a plasma, get it in HD, unless you just don't care for quality that much nor using it much in the future.

but like these guys said, for now, EDTV's display DVDs in their highest possible resolution. However, you still cannot view HD signals. Also if you are planning on getting a next gen console, you won't be able to take advantage of the HD capabilities of them.

so basically if you aren't a huge quality buff then it will be fine for you i guess. but personally, i think EDTV's are for people who just don't understand the whole HD thing, and they see Plasma for cheap and immediately think it's HD or something.

IMHO, DLP > LCD > Plasma

plasmas are the bottom of the barrel IMO (image quality and reliability that is).

yup.

However, DLPs and LCDs rate about the same. there are certain issues with both. Rainbows with DLPs and Screen-Door-Effects (SDE) with LCDs. However, lot less ppl notice the rainbows and its very bearable to most IF they do.
If you are really into Plasmas, go for the 3500 or over ones. Below that is not worth it. If you are open to others, check out the new line of DLPs and LCDs, and maybe pick an older model if you dont care much about cosmetics, for less.

Yeah, but most channels would be broadcast in HD (hopefully) by then, and difference to the naked non-videophile eye for 1080i vs 1080p would be minimal.
So i just went with last year's model since the prices really plunged there. So you CAN get a 46" dlp for 1500.

Depends on your viewing distance and the quality of your source material.

Also, the quality of plasma displays varies quite a bit. They go from very very good, to absolutely horrid. A 42" HD one starts at $1699 or so, but it's probably not the one you want.

I have a Panasonic EDTV and love it. DVDs look great, HD material looks great. Not as great as my 1280x720 DLP projector, but greate nonetheless.

Personally, I'd go 42" EDTV or 50" HDTV. I don't think I'd spend the money for extra resolution on a 42" set.

Good luck!

Don't know how the opinion that Plasmas are bottom of the barrel in image quality got so prevalent. Plasma image quality varies significantly but comparing a good plasma to a good DLP TV reveals a lot of advantages for the plasma. Some of the more notable ones are better color, lack of rainbow artifacts, and much better viewing angles, not to mention plasma scales SD better naturally. Reliability is also not as much of a concern with plasma panels any more unless you plan to keep your TV for more than 10 years and will watch a hell of a lot of TV in that time.

Bottom line, see the displays for yourself and make the decision with your eyes, not opinions from self-proclaimed experts.

plasmas are great i sold one a while back pioneer 43in here on this forum for 1800.00
but hd is what you want if you insist on plasma but id recomend dlp lcd longer life and just awesom love the sony dlp lcd 53'' especialy with an htpt.....
BUT REMBER YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

I dont believe they will be making 42 inch 1080P TVs though (no advantage with that resolution on that small screen) Min will be 50 inch if i recall correctly.
