I recently bought a hitachi 42" plasma screen. However it did not come with a power cable, the person whom i bought it from had previously lost it. Can i use a computer power cable safely in place of the one that came with the tv?
Your TV and computer both use AC cords with a standard IEC C13 connector. The only question is whether the actual wire is of sufficient guage to handle the current required by your plasma TV.
Somewhere in the manual and on the back of your TV, you should find the current consumption spec, usually in amps (A). 42" plasma TV's listed on this page, consume from 146.49 to 235.32 watts. As a close approximation, AC volts x current = power (watts) so 120 V x 2 A = 240 W so a cable rated for 2.5 A (~300 W) or more should be safe.
Go order a Volex 17604 or 17605 (2 meter, 3 meter respectively). This is THE power cord. Uses 3x14AWG gauge wire, with a 100% coverage foil shield to keep the EM interference low. Rated for 1875 Watts (15amps in USA 110-120Volt lines).
